Now you're going to have to explain to these folks, how your mother came to fly P-51s. Wonderful story.

Brought a tear to my eyes... Truly were some brave men (and women) in that generation!

My Mom was a WASP - a farm girl from Iowa - who wanted to fly more than anything else.  She, and about 1,000 other women were in this program.  They were trained in ALL aircraft and ferried them from manufacturer to bases around the country; they towed targets; they tested repaired aircraft for airworthiness; and more.  These women were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal 3 years ago - so many family members and living WASPs attended, they had to close the Capitol Visitors Center.  My sisters and I accepted my Mom's posthumous award - a day we won't ever forget.  My Dad was Chief Ops Officer at Eglin Field; he assigned flights to the WASPs and met my Mom there!  Among other cool things, he did all the take offs and landings in a B-25 for the Movie - 30 seconds over Tokyo filmed at Eglin.  And, after an assignment in the Phillipines and the end of the war, he returned home and my folks were married.

We've been very active in supporting Space Coast Honor Flight out of Melbourne, FL.  Taking WWII vets (and some Korean War vets to Washington DC.  A truly worthy organization.  http://www.spacecoasthonorflight.org/

Great story. The ladies of the WASP freed male pilots from the more mundane, yet critically important tasks so the men could fly the combat missions. We are proud of your Mom and Dad, Toni.

Lake Martin and a P-51.  It doesn't get much better than that.  I will take the sound of a Merlin over those pesky PWC's any day.
