Not wanting to hijack the water quality topics, but wouldn't excess algae reduce the
amount of dissolved oxygen in the water? (Keeping the fish deeper and not schooling
as much.)

Live algae produces oxygen through photosynthesis near the surface. Dead algae rots and the rotting process consumes oxygen. O2 levels are typically lower at the bottom where the dead algae has fallen to rot. Since photosynthsis only happens during the day, O2 levels will typically drop overnight as oxygen is consumed by the decomposition process.
