i have had home & car insurance with State Farm for 47 years; just got notice that effective August 1, my $1000 home deductible will increase to 1/2% of my dwelling coverage --a 150% increase !! & i have not had a claim since 1996

I suspect the increase was in lieu of a rate increase. Since you are not looking to file claim(s), the deductible increase should be the prerferred way rather than paying a higher pemium. Homeowners and auto is a one year contract. You pay a premium and they provide coverage. After the one year of a policy, you re free to leave and they are free to make changes. We may not like it but that is the way it is.

They are rated much better the SF for service and claims payment and probably are a lot less expensive.  Call Dadeville Ins, or there is an independent agent in Alex City that also sells.

Much of consumer insurance has moved to a different model. It's sad but the individual agents are being squeezed out by the "kiddies on computers" model. I would suggest you try Geico or some equivalent. I had an Allstate agent for decades but my auto rates went up so much I got better covereage for almost half. Now I'm the agent.

One note about State Farm...they use the post office address to figure in the fire department rating. If you are in a fire district that is different from your post office they will still use the department in your postal zone.  It's something peculiar to State Farm and maybe some others.  So if you live in Dadeville and your postal address is Jacksons Gap they will rate you on the Jacksons Gap fire department not Dadeville even though Dadeville shows up when you dial 911.
