As a long time fan of the NFL, in particular the Steelers, I watched with morbid curiosity the drafting of a less than mediocre player simply because he was gay. And now the inevitable has happened. He got cut and was not picked up on waivers. Still a chance he could get on a practice squad for some team but who needs the distraction? There are tons of players as good or better than him and none of them would generate the media circus that this guy would. I am not sure who advised him to make a big deal about his sexual orientation but in hindsight it was probably a mistake.
The irony of all this is Tony Dungee's rationale as to why he wouldn't have drafted Sam was immediately proven correct but the media reaction to his very reasonable comments. I can assure you that had Sam been more talented he would have made the team. He's a very good athlete but not NFL caliber regardless of his race, creed, sexual orientation, etc. Maybe he realized that and figured it was his only chance of getting drafted. If so, he miscalculated because it would not help him make the team and once he was cut every other team would be free to pass on him without being called homophobes. Now all that is missing is the made for TV movie.......

"I watched with morbid curiosity the drafting of a less than mediocre player simply because he was gay."
From USA Today Sports:: "The math was never in Sam’s favor in St. Louis. No matter how you slice it, Sam was always on the outside. Jeff Fisher took nine defensive linemen and five defensive ends. The Rams were covered from Day 1. Sam was a luxury, an insurance policy."
He was 2013 SEC defensive player of the year and AP All American. Why wasn't he mediocre when he played college football but suddenly became mediocre to you when he announced he was gay?
Give me a break. You forgot to add he may also be a Democrat.

Yeah that's why the NFL teams were lining up to draft him. You are such a left wing nut GF.......totally lack any sense of reality. Use your brain GF, if he were good enough he would have made the team. I said he was an excellent athlete but was not good enough for the NFL. That's what the scouting reports said. That's what the experts saw in the combines. And what a bunch of BS about the Rams having too many players at his position. If that were true, why draft him at all? Why waste a pick? Because he was gay? Give ME a break! You and your news sources.....you need to get out more. USA Today.....the cartoon of newspapers.....
And I could care less who he voted for. I could care less about his skin color. And mostly I could care less about his sexual orientation. Frankly of it weren't for his public pronouncement no one would even know who he was outside his family and friends and he would not have even been drafted. But he did and he was and he's not good enough to have been picked up off waivers. As I said, maybe he can make a practice squad and maybe he can improve and work his way onto a team.....then again, maybe not and he will need to move on with his life. Big deal, happens to heterosexual players all the time.......welcome to adulthood.

But yeah GF, he is the greatest player ever........you apparently know less about football than you do about politics or economics.......a feat I did not think possible.......sort of like TOTUS being a worse president than the peanut farmer.

He got his shot and didn't make it. Happens to a lot of players. He doesn't get a break because he is gay.

Yeah after the pix of him groping the stripper I suspect Jerry is trying to resurrect his image. Wonder what the practice squad pays? Probably more than Sam could get elsewhere. All this does is extend the story which is hudely distracting but what the heck. If Jerry is willing to pay him and Sam wants the money then have at it. Lets see if it ends up being worth it if they eventually release him from the practice squad.

Maybe, it is time to judge Sam as a football player who was 2013 SEC Defensive player of the year and concensus All American rather than as a gay football player who was 2013 SEC Defensive player of the year and concensus All American. He will make it or not on his skills. You may eventually want him on your "fantasy" football team......

I do not consider myself a bigot, and I don't think it makes me one because I don't think he should get special treatment because he is gay. He made the issue of his gayness public, but honestly I don't see how his sexual orientation has anything to do with his abilities as an aspiring professional athlete. He may or may not get another chance, but I hope it will be based on his athletic abilties and not on his sexual oriention. I support people being true to themselves, but I don't see a reason to make it a public issue.

I wonder if he would have been selected to receive the football awards if he had come out while in college? If some on the Forum were voting, I suspect they would not have voted for him based on his on field ability.

He is the one that made this about his sexual orientation. Until he opened his big mouth no one gave a rats behind about the issue. I for one could care less and I stand by my belief that he is not good enough to play in the NFL. Neither are the hundreds of other players cut every year, some of whom may also be gay and most of whom are not but all of whom kept their sexual orientation to themselves because it didn't matter.
And quit talking about SEC player, All America, etc. There are tons of them that didn't make it in the NFL. In fact a fair number of Heisman Trophy winners struggled in professional football. It's a totally different game than college, both in terms of speed and size/strength. He barely got drafted, he got cut, he didn't get picked up on waivers and the only team that wants him as cannon fodder for the first, second and third string was South America's team. Let's see how long that lasts. Maybe he will improve enough to make the team and maybe not. Time will tell but I will be happy for the day when the media is no longer fixated on some third rate player because he decided to tell the world he was gay. It just isn't important.
Speaking of which, my two favorite teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers and whoever is playing the Cowboys. I would go for the Browns and the Ravens over the Cowboys and that says a lot.
