now the UN is saying Isreal is the number one violator of human rights.  Give me a break.  With the likes of ISIS, Boko Haram, and North Korea for comparison they must be kidding.  I simply do not understand why the U.S. keeps throwing money at a body that clearly does not act in our national interest.

I don't think they are the number 1 violator of human rights, given the examples that you cited, but they are pretty bad in their treatment of the Palestinians.

I think we continue to fund the UN because it suits us to have a forum like that.

Useless. Toothless. Sloppy. ineffective. Expensive to me and you. Corrupt. And very hungry at the feed trough..

Wow, sounds a lot like a description of the American Political establishment.

Okay, I'll put on a Washington Hat and tell you that we support the UN because it provides a forum for dialogue.  It also provides a forum for condemnation of those that do things we don't like; and  allows us to build colitions of like minded nations. Oh yes, and it serves as another arm of our diplomatic mission. Hat off now

You are right, they are toothless because they have no means to enforce their resolutions.  Their condemnations are about as powerful as a flea.  And no one really cares if they are condemned by the UN..  I supect we still fund it because it is easier to do that than to stop.  Sad, isn't it?

Well, I just completed my Federal Income Tax Return and I am wearing my Irate Taxpayer Hat.. And the level of funding that the U.S. provides for a defunct joke is just plain stupid,, and with MY money. Money that would be better targeted to supporting the expanding cost of social programming of voters.

Happy..Happy.. The U.S. only spent over $6 Billion for the help of the U.N. in 2010. Man, that could buy a lot of stuff..

Great bargain...

With regard to the Washington Hat view, it also gives our detractors a forum in which to denounce us, which it seems to me they do with some regularity.  From what I read the UN is also extremely inefficient, with an awful lot of our taxpayer dollars going to support UN "diplomats" who draw hefty salaries yet do little to nothing over the long term.  Someone needs to look objectively at what we get from participation and what we pay for that "privilege".  Maybe since China and others are nearing equality with us in their ability to fund the UN, we should at least reduce our ante and thus let them know that soaking us is not taken for granted.

Please understand that I am not saying I support our funding of the UN.  I personally think it is an institution that has probably outlived its original purpose.  I just don't foresee any leaders, present or future, that will have the intestinal fortitude to walk away from it.

Yes, I gathered that when you took pains to mention the "Washington Hat" you were reflecting a train of thought that was not necessarily one you agreed with.

I'm an Alabamian now.  the Washington hat feels strange on my head.  I've been retired for almost 9 years.  As they say, Happiness is seeing Washington in your rearview mirror.

I recently retired from my second career - as what is derisively described as a Beltway Bandit.  In my first as active duty Air Force I spent a four year stint in the five sided Puzzle Palace, and in my second as a defense contractor, often found myself on business trips to DC.  Each trip back up there simply reminded me of all the reasons why I am glad I don't liventhere any more.

Didn't realize you had retired from your second career.  Congratulations.  Guess you'll have more time for the lake now.

As each of my friends have retired, they have left the DC area.  Unless you have kids in the area, it's hard to justify staying there.  There are a few things that I really miss, but not enough to stay there.  Wish Montgomery would get a Wegmans Supermarket in additon to the Whole Foods (aka Whole Paycheck).

Have been working on the addition to our cabin.  Not going as quickly as I might like, since just about everything now is a first time experience, and thus subject to the learning curve.  Some of our major accomplishments would make most lake folks scratch their head and wonder why.  But I once heard a saying that goes something like "it matters not so much where you start or finish, but how far you travel".  We are still a far cry from most, but have traveled a long way - but still yet have a long road ahead.

May embark upon an abbreviated third career.  A  govie friend who I worked with "in the trenches" a few years back needs some help, as he has assumed the security role for a major naval acquisition and needs help herding all the cats.  Would be a relatively short term effort, ending when we get all the cats goose-stepping together like Hitler's troops and he doesn't need me any more.  Meanwhile I will continue to take baby steps on that addition!
