Hmmm...maybe your realtor and banker buddies need to move to Atlanta where real estate and construction is booming again in most areas...especially intown!

why do I somehow get the feeling from your "hmmm" that you suspect it is all Obama's fault. If business is bad in Montgomery did it ever occur that Judge Roy Moore and his crazy actions and comments might have at least a little to do with it?

In 1950 Georgia had 3,450,000 population and Alabama had 3,060,000 (90% of GA)...today Georgia has 10,100,000 and Alabama has 4,850,000 (48% of GA).  People go where the economy grows.  In the most critical years between 1950 and today Georgia was blessed with Carl Sanders and Ivan Allen while the face of Alabama was George Wallace and Bull Conner.  Think about it.

Are you bragging or seeking sympathy?

l'm pondering...why have the last 50 years been so different in GA, NC and VA than in AL and MS.  I think from the economic standpoint anybody has to agree their histories have been very different.  There are, l am sure many reasons, but could the attitude of the leaders maybe have played some part?  In the 60's and 70's CEO's read the papers.

This string started by Bamaalum's pondering just why business was bad in Montgomery...well, CEO's still read the papers and Chief Justice Roy Moore is certainly making the headlines lately. Of course his antics have no direct relation to the economy in Montgomery at any particular moment, but the cumulative effect of years of knuckle-heads like him might.

Leadership has gone downhill in GA over the last several years, but thankfully we still have no Judge Moore's in top positions.

These leaders were elected si I guess that's what the people wanted back then anyway.

I think the increases in crime in Montgomery is causing people to move out, and prevents new people from moving and building there.  I understand from my contacts that Auburn is booming.  And I read that Auburn is one of the fastest growing cities in AL.

Another thing about the real estate market.  Apparently, MIllienials have no interest in home ownership.  They prefer to rent, and rental prices have increased dramatically.

They also tend to want to live in an urban setting with decent public transit rather than a sprawling suburb that requires getting in a car to fetch a loaf of bread.  This is what is driving the multi-family boom in the Atlanta in-town areas.  Of course the developers will do what they always do...over-build and bring along another real estate bust.

What caused Atlanta to grow so fast?  Would an international airport have anything to do with it?  Now they have more people than they have water.
