Donald Trump has finally said publicly that we are running a "PC" war with ISIS, worrying about collateral damage.  He said we need to go after their families.  Ash Carter, the SecDef says that we are at war with ISIS, but are we fighting the war in a way that guarentees we will not win?  Think German WWII. Did we worry about collateral damage?

has been a PC entanglement.  Vietnam started the PC liberal culture, led by the likes of John Kerry, Hilda Clinton, Slick Willie, Jane Fonda and many other liberals.  We have the capability to win any war, but the scrotum is empty.

Trump is right that we need to stop worrying about collateral damage.  All one has to do is look at the fire bombings of places like Dresden to know that when you are in a war to win it, there will be civilian casualties.  Such is the way of actual war as opposed to what we are currently doing.

Isn't it typical that the media is painting this as Trump wanting to target the families.......that is not what he said.  Yet another in a long line of examples of their overt bias.  The mainstream media and Democrat party are one organism.

Trump's opinions are irrelevant to me,the issues in the Middle East are well above his head.

But wait a minute, this war has to be limited.  We have to accept that every one of our previous efforts to impose our will on Middle Eastern nations has come to no good.   And now, if we don't have real restraint, we could hit any number of trip-wires that will cause the situation to spin even further out of control.  We should all worry everytime some broadcaster characterizes all this as the beginning of World War III.

We whipped ourselves up into a fighting frenzy when we invaded Iraq, then quickly came to regret it when we found we couldn't control the aftermath like we hoped.    We unseated Gaddafi to clear the way for Democracy and Libya's society just disintegrated into anarchy.    It's dangerous to start thinking about military escalations because the outcomes are so unpredictable right now.    I vote for the playing the long game and keeping our presence very limited while the Saudi's, Turks, Kurds and Iran take on ISIS.   I still believe we should see this as a Sunni-Shitte religous war, and ISIS' efforts are really directed toward sucking us into it.   When we lead the charge, we fuel more resentment of the US and doubts about our motives.

If someone can tell me about a clean strategy, I'd be happy to hear it.   I think that when you're in a bad situation with no good choices, sometimes the only thing to do is try not to make it worse.

I might agree with you, if I hadn't seen the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs telling a Congressional hearing that we definitely don't have ISIS under control.  Sometimes decisive action with a clear goal is the best strrategy.

One of the problem with Iraq was that the State Department failed to plan for the aftermath.  We apparently thought that we would be welcomed with hearts and flowers by the Iraqi people, who would embrace our form of democracy and everything would be great. Instead we dismissed their Army and failed to understand what would be necessary to establish a new govenrment.  Rory Stewart wrote a very good book about his time in the early days of Iraq after the invasion.  Lots of mistakes were made.
