I'm wondering if anyone else has seen it and what you took away from it.  Everyone that has seen it knows that Hilary is not mentioned in it, so don't go down that road.

Went to see it last night.  Was kind of like observing 2 hours of a video game.  Main take aways for me were one the state department did an abismal job of accessing the requiment for security at the diplomatic outpost, two the CIA station chief was in a VERY precarious position regarding the utilization of their security forces.  Station chief had to balance the risking of 24 lives versus the diplomatic delegation and possibly some of the deployed security guys.  Im not in a position to judge obviously, just saying it was a tough spot and hind sight is always 20/20.  That being said the real issue is why did they not plan for this evetuality especially given that this location had been identified as one of the most dangerous in the region?

What I couldn't figure out is why Stevens went there to start with, with only two personal security guards.  If they knew it was very danagerous, why put himself at risk like that?

I know it is up to the host nation to provide security to the diplomatic posts, but it seems to me illogical that they wouldn't realize at the first sign of trouble that that those guards would just walk away.

My take away was why the heck were we there in the first place.  If every other country had closed their embassies and left due to the instability, why did we stay?  I have heard that the State Department relied very heavily on the judgement of the Ambassador, and in this case, his optimism turned out to be unwarrented and deadly.

Remember it was a movie.

Yes, of course you are right, it is a movie, so I certainly didn't take it as a documentary.  I even read that it was released now to make Hilary and the democrats look bad before the Iowa caucasus

But I assume there was some underlying truth to what happened depicted in the movie.  I just wondered what other people who saw it thougt about it.

The movie was based on a book and was supposedly true to the source.  Haven't seen it yet but I plan to if I can get my wife to go to a movie theater.  As I understand it their goal was not to point fingers at any one individual but to the amorphous "government" and its inability or unwillingness to help.

As for why Stevens was there, that is the question.  The rumors I have heard was there was some arms selling operation to support some rebels or something.  Who knows if that is true or not but what is true is this was an enormous failure by the State Department which was being run by you know who.

They didn't really get into why Stevens was there.  I hope you can get your wife to go see it.  There is a lot of shooting, but nothing especially gory until almost the end.  As far as I'm concerned, it is hard to say who screws up more, the CIA or the State Department.

It's not the movie itself per se, she just doesn't like going to the movie theaters. Although I would more likely be successful with yet another version of Pride and Prejudice or Emma. Ugh!  I'll do my best to get her there and please don't tell me either of those movies are great. Too much dang incessant talking and not enough beheadings......yes, I am a guy when it comes to movies.

LOL!!  I learned long ago about men and movies.  Some movies are just meant for watching at home - I 've got a few of them on my list right now.  So much better to watch at home and not have to listen to the complaints.   Guns and shooting don't bother me, so if husband expresses an interest, we usually go.  So few movies even worth seeing these days.
