I have been reading a lot about the new African American History and I know that Obama spoke at it's opening.  It is part of the Smithsonian complex.  But what I am thinking is why we need a separate African American History.  We already have an American history museum, so why wouldn't the "African American" history be incorporated in the American History Museum? Aren't we one people?  Isn't African History part of the American Story too?  Seems to me that this kind of thing promotes the idea that we have a separate history.  What next, the Italian American Museum?  Will every sub-group require their own history museum as part of the Smithsonian complex?

I have a friend on FB who is black.  At one time he was my executive assistant and for a lot of reasons, he refers to me as Mom.  He and I spend a lot of time talking about race.  And his friends get into it too.  One thing I find is that a lot of his friends get angry when I ask them the hard questions:  Like exactly how often have you been harassed by the police for no reason?  One a week, once a month, once a year, once in your life?  And I often ask them why they have such anger and hatred of the police for stopping them, where many times they are being stopped for meeting the description of someone that has committed a crime.  They get mad at the police, but why do they not get angry with the thugs of their own race that cause the situation to begin with?  And why can't they put themselves in the cops shoes when someone appears to be threatening them, and they shoot.  What do they think they would do in that situation?    The thing is that because I am a white woman asking these questions, they get really angry.  I mean really angry, and will unplug from the discussion with the quip that I am part of the problem.

The other day I used the example of my being a white woman who drives a white Lincoln Navigator, with a little bit of damage on one side where a deer ran into me.  Well, supposed I was in Alex City and there was a hit and run the witnesses said the accident was caused by a white woman driving a white Lincoln Navigator.  If the police stop me to question me, should I consider that as harassment?

My take away is that a lot of black people have gotten to the point where they only read black websites and are being fed a continual diet of how they have been wronged and how they are oppressed at every turn.  It's not even that they have to have experienced it themselves, to believe that it is happening all the time.

I am a long way from a racist.  I've had numerous black friends and employees over the years and in the beginning of my career, I worked for a black woman and 80% of our office was black.  One black woman told me that in her experience, black people were harder on other black people than they were on whites.  But the conversations we had back in those days were much, much different than the conversations that seem possible now. And I wonder why that is?  Social media?

I have been saying for decades that racism will never die I  America because there are too many Jesse Jackson's, Jeremiah wright's,, Al Sharpton and the like making big bucks keeping it alive. I really fear what a post Obama America will be like.  He will become the biggest race hustler ever. Those folks get angry when you confront them because 99% have NEVER been harassed by by anybody just because they are black. They are told from infancy that the are oppressed by whitey, but the reall oppressors are there neighbors and "leaders"  who have learned to work the system. It's disgusting.

Suppose they said "It was a white woman." and you were stopped because you were both. Not once, but periodically. Would that bother you?

I'm thinking you really would have enjoyed growing up here in the South.   Northerners have so much trouble believing us when we say that our slaves were happy & content.    Afterall, we counted each one as 5/12 of a person.   After the Civil War we kept life simple for them by using laws to keep them from voting or going to decent schools.  It was for their own good, you know.

Before this crazy Civil Rights stuff, life was good for our ex-slaves and there is no reason to remember it otherwise.

I agree totally with both the posts above.  Probably the most disappointing thing good black people have to deal with is most know their problems are created by others of their race, and they don't feel they can do anything to correct it.  Truth is:  The black community MUST correct its own problems.  The situation has been created by liberals that any effort to correct is RACIST!!

Think about it liberals.

The War of Northern aggression ended in 1864, the Civil Rights Act(passed exclusively by Republicans BTW) passed in 1964. So just how many of these slaves were around when the REPUBLICANS passed the Civil Rights act? How productive were theses centurian slaves?

Your point is lost on me.  No where did I say that I thought slavery was right.  But I would say that blacks have come a long way from slavery and even a long way since the Civil Rights Act was signed into law in 1964.  I am questioning why their history requires a separate and distinct museum from that of American History.  Yes, slavery is part of our history - doesn't make it right, but it is there and we can't pretend it isn't.

Copperline, you can make me out to be a racist, but I'm not.  I'll bet I've done much more for equal opportunity than you ever have.  I'll stand on my record.

What really irks me is we are constantlyheld to account for a practice the ended 150 years ago but liberals are obsessed with. Yet slavery still exists in parts of the world but liberals could care less. It's all about the women and children but they ignore young, prepubescent girls forced into slavery in the Muslim world. I wouldn't be surprised to find out there is a trade of young girls in the Muslim areas in Minnesota and Michigan.

Hound I would have to believe that part of the reason for the change in conversation can be found at the White House.

the other day I watched a video by a man who wandered around areas of Michigan and Minnesota talking to Muslims from Somalia.  The intersesting thing is that they said that they thought the U.S. should pass a law to prevent anyone disparaging Allah, or making fun of Allah.  A number of them thought it would be a good idea and they would like to see Sharia law implemented. And that they didn't like it here and would like to go home to Somalia.  I think he interviewed at least 25.  I wondered why we don't give them a ticket "home".

I have a friend in St Paul MN. On one of my visits he took me through an area that looked like s street seen from ifghanistan. They also have a very large veitnamese population that isolates and live by their on rules. They call them mung or hung or some such.  Nasty folks . sadly most all of these "refugees" would rather be back where they came from. Just more lunacy of the left. I look at pics of these European refugees and see primarily millinery age males. Throughout history  true refugee groups have consisted of women,  children and old men. Send them back and let them fight for their own damn countries or die.  I really don't care which because I know it is nothing but a jihadi diaspora.

Not sure COPPERIDIOT knows about sarcasm, but he raises an interesting point.  When all the slaves were freed, where did they live and sleep, and where did they get food?  Wonder if the liberal idiots ever thought about that?  No EBT, no welfare, no Medicaid, no free cell phones, no dimokrap freebies.....wonder who helped take care of all those freed slaves who had lived in chains for centuries?

Definitely was not calling you a racist.   I was being sarcasic &  saying that if you had lived here when you were young, you might have a different view of how bad it was.  I think many people would prefer to forget that period of US history (that being both slavery and the subsequent 150 years of trying to keep ex-slaves out of general society).   The further it gets into the rear view mirror, the easier it is to forget it ever happened or what it was really like.

Lots of white folks resent things like Martin Luther King's birthday, Black History month, etc... because they see it as giving special rights to a minority of people.   I don't see it that way.   The new museum in DC & it's like are for reminding us of how bad those days were.

We had better not forget or we could fall right back into a time when racial animosity is considered rational & normal.

Because obammy has brought us such wonderful,  peaceful race relations. You prove yourself to be more of an idiot with every post. And you are really bad at math.  1865+150=2015. That's like now. So please introduce us to the "former" slaves. I have never seen a statistic but would bet that less than half of today's black population can trace ancestry back to slavery. Even if ALL of them were,  how is that our fault? My ancestors came here AFTER the Civil War and NEVER owned a slave.  Why should I pay reparations? Because we all know that is where this is headed. If us white Christians are dawned horrible, why are Africans lining up to migrate here. I'm not talking about the refugees either. Most of the blacks here now came after the Civil War too.

You want to make a difference go to Africa where slavery still exists and fight to stop it there and STFU about a long dead practice e here in the (used to be) BEACON OF FREEDOM AROUND THE WORLD.

I was just wondering why a separate museum was needed - why weren't these things included in the regular museum of American History.  I think having things separate just widens the divide between us.  We cannot deny slavery is part of our history.  And I would happily pay reparations to any slave if they were alive.

Me bad at math?  probably guilty... but not in this case.   Your understanding of history may need another look though.   The 150 years post Civil War was marked by laws that prevented  Black folks from voting, from living in white neighborhoods, from attending white schools....these were clearly sanctioned legal actions designed to keep them in an under-class status.   That's systemic racism, and  we haven't wiped out all the effects of that by a long shot.

Nobody is talking about paying reparations here, you made that up.   I was talking about the importance of always remembering what happened, how atrocious it was.... and how we talked ourselves into believing it was OK.

We can't pay reparations to ex-slaves and the decendents of ex-slaves because there are simply too many minority groups who have been purposely damaged during the history of the US.   These includes Native Americans, Hispanic settlers, First Nations groups plus the people who were bought and sold like cattle.

Nobody talking about reparations? Nobody that matters anyway,  just liberals and the UN. Do you ever read any news besides huffinpuff? The UN just passed a resolution calling for reparations for black Americans.

Yes, you are right.  the UN did just pass that resolution.  Maybe the money can come from the additional taxes that Hillary claims the "rich" will pay.

How do you feel about the Holacaust Museum?  12 years of discrimanation and death camps / 350 years of slavery and discrimination...both deserve recognition lest we forget!

I don't think anyone is likely to forget these things.

Since the Holocaust is not part of AMERICAN hisotry, i have no problem with it being a separate museum.  Been there and it is a very moving experience.

I think our Black citizens realize that the slavery experience should be included in American history and I think they feel, correctly, that until recently it had been largely incorrectly presented in our history.  I think they feel, correctly, that the black journey in America is unique because it was a journey defined by slavery and discrimination for 350 years...a journey no othe ''group'' of Americans faced.  The American Indians also have a unique history and have a National Museum.  Do you also object to it?

Sorry, I see that as different.  Funny, with the way we have mistreated the Native Americans, and they truly are oppressed in this country, they do not demand reparations or riot.

They have suffered, they have had their land stolen, they have been uprouted and forced onto reservations, their negotiated treaties have been broken, and their sacred sites desecrated...but they were never enslaved!  True, they have not ''rioted''*, neither have 99+% of blacks.  They have and are strongly protesting in many venues, but their numbers are small as would be expected for a people who comprise only 1% of our population.  I do have to wonder whether the same could be said if they made up 13% of our population and were largely ill housed in crowded sections of our large cities and, sadily, still treated by many of our fellow Americans as 2d class citizens.  Bottom line, it is hard to understand how you can justify a National Museum for one abused segment of America but object to a Museum for a larger segment that has been abused and enslaved.

*  FYI:  Many American Indian groups are demanding reparations and even return of the ''lands stolen from them''.

If they are, they are not getting as much press coverage as the blacks.

No, I don't suffer from liberal white guilt.  I don't buy into the idea that we have to "fix" everything for everyone.
