The correct name is High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse, or HEMP.  A nuclear burst at high altitude excites the living hell out of the atmosphere, and when the atoms settle back into their natural state they emit one heck of an electromagnetic pulse.  Something to be concerned about, because if Junior in North Korea figures out how to pop one at high altitude over the US it would do far more damage than popping one on the ground in a major US city.

A HEMP event destroys everything electronic.  No power, no food, no water, no sewer, no gas.  Cars might not run.

Every 90 minutes a North Korean "weather satellite" goes over your head.

The North Koreans have the high gamma output Russian EMP design that will produce 150KV/M in one little pop.

Of course the Russians can surface a sub and lights are out in minutes.

Our own congressional committees put US population survival at 10%.
