I plan to publish an article every month highlighting different techniqes for catching fish on Lake Martin. This time of the year spotted bass are moving back into the creeks and mouths of the bays and are schooling up. Find the bait, you will find the fish and a good time to catch fish if your have the proper equipment and use the proper techniques. Verticle jigging with a spoon is very productive this time of year. This type of fishing requires good electronics with a mapping GPS function. I like the navionics, good details, shows creeks, low water bouys and boat docks.

Once you locate the bait or school of fish, I have used two methods that are very productive.

  1. Measure the line to desired depth, give the spoon an upward pop, lower the rod tip keeping in contact with lure
  2. Let the spoon drop to the bottom, power reel upwards, and drop the lure keeping in contact with lure

most fish species will hit the lure on the fall, you will feel a slight thump or the line goes slack, set the hook. Falling lures simulates a dying bait fish. Use a rod with a lot of sensativity. Also, i use flouracarbon line for visibility and low stretch.

If you would like more information on this type of fishing or need individualized instruction, check out my web site Ahluring Angler university on lakemartin.com. Between now and through January, I am running a special for my hand poured jigging spoons, 4 for $10 dollars. They are powder coated and i use 2x #4 treble hooks and 3D eyes. I have two styles, shad and minnow in 3/4, 1 & 1.5 oz weights. Most popular colors are silver, White, White pearl, silver Holographic blue glitter, white w/red head. Email or call me for your color combinations at jklaws@charter.net, or call me on my cell 205-317-4868.
