Congrats - you are of an age and level of optimism that you think that's going to be sufficient to attract your stated demographic. Good luck, and get your gloves ready.

Amen!  Lol.  It is sad that we have devolved to that realization.

I almost want to offer my services to augment retirement budget but I’m afraid he would dock my pay for pooping out too soon!

So if he raised it to $15 or even $20 per hour, could he find some college students to do manual labor?

back in Hoover, you can find laborers in the guadaluhoover area at $10 per hour.  Maybe there is an area around the lake to pick up day laborers?

If you will not do it yourself (not matter what the reason might be) they assume that they have you over a barrel. They have learned to assess the property owner's net worth ($1,000,000 home on a pricy lot, 2 BMW's, and a couple of 60-80 k boats in a very nice boat house). They conclude that you could easily afford to pay 25 to 30 dollars an hour. Just Saying, kids today might be a little shy of manual labor but they have been taught to look for value.

They do not want jobs and must not need jobs. With a business in a college town we have always had college partime workers until 2017. Now it seems that  no one wants work. They all seem to drive BMW's , Lexus ES350's etc and  stay in the newest constructed condo's and apartments. I have actually approached students and asked if they or anynone thay knew needed  partime jobs and it is NO ! Must have approached 15 or more as well as listing on job boards. Times have really changed. I as a teenager got up every morning at 4:30 AM and delivered the newspaper for $55-60 per month for 5 years.

A good number of them have never worked a day in their lives.  Interestingly, a friend of mine's daughter took a year off between her undergratuate and graduate school, and took a full time job.  The experience she had with working gave her a leg up for graduate school and for securing an internship.   The company told her that they rarely get young people that have experience in working an actual job, and they actually freak out when things get really busy and they have to work extra hours.

My niece is a prime example - she is a junior in college and she has never worked a day in her life.  Her mother told me that they never thought it was worth her time to work at a minimum wage job.

The sad part is that these young people have no idea of the satisfaction of having done work and been paid for it.  It gives young peope a sense of independence.

Interesting comments.  Our family made sure our kids had part-time jobs while in high school and college, and I’m proud to say the tradition continues.  Our kids have made sure their kids have held part-time jobs as soon as they are old enough.  In my opinion, it’s a failure of the parents if their kids don’t grow up to be productive, responsible adults.
