Put my feeder out last year.,...bam! This year... nada? Also noticed no carpenter bees this year. Weird.

We have not had the number of hummingbirds that we have had in previous years.  The carpenter bees have been plentiful.

We didn't get our first hummingbirds last year until mid-June, but once they arrived, there were more than I had ever seen; for a while I was filling four feeders every day.

This year, we already have several; they arrived about two weeks ago. Nothing like the numbers from last summer yet, but definitely arrived earlier.

I love hummingbirds and while we don't have a feeder we do have them show up on our deck once in a while.  So here's my question.  I have a feeder but because we are only there on weekends I've been reluctant to put it out because it will go bad.  Will they show up if I only put it out on weekends or does it need to be there for a while to attract them?

I don't think they discriminate.  Put up a feeder and generally they will come.  But you can also attract them with with red flowers and any kind of flower that has a horn shape.  They not only buzz our feeders, but they stop and check out the flowers on our porch.

Interesting.  We don't have flowers as we're only there on weekends and miss too many to make sure they're watered and don't have a sprinkler system.  We do have a bird feeder but it only works if you keep it filled or they go elsewhere and it takes them time to find it.  Was wondering if it was the same with the hummingbird one or if they will find it if its only out for weekends.  I'll give it a try the next time we're down.  Hope they show up.

Do try it and see.  If you have full time neighbors close by that feed hummers, you should be able to attract some with your feeder on weekends.  “Welfare birds” are non-discrimanatory, they love free stuff from anyone....just like dimokraps.

We are weekenders and put up 3 feeders every spring.  We always have a few hummers and exen a big ole woodpecker that hangs upside down on the feeder.  The sugar water does not go bad, it may ferment a little but the birds don't mind.  Something new this year, we have a pair of bluebirds that have nested in a planter on the deck.  4 or 5 eggs.
