i think what you are seeing is the beginning of the development of the rumored "resort"

Does that mean hotel, convention center, etc?

For minimal investment, compared to ball golf, a disc golf course could be constructed.  Disc golf is growing far faster than ball golf.  The woods around the lake have the potential to be a tournament level disc golf course, possibly attracting a PDGA sponsored event in the future.

I don't know about convention center - but an upscale hotel with attractions.

yes, this is the first official announcement on the long rumored development off of Wicker Point Road. Personally, I think it will be a huge hit and an asset to the lake community.

The article says the Hotel has been dropped from the plans.

Until about 90 seconds ago I had never heard of disc golf and thought you were joshing us.  Be damned if a DudcDuckGo search (no more Google) didn't come up with quite a few hits and indeed it is a recognized sport and PDGA a real entity!  Is the "disc" something like a frisbee?

Thanks for enlightening this old codger with new information.

Probably not a good time for a hotel or they decided not to compete with all the people renting out houses for AirB&Bs.

I hope the lake developers are reading the Lake Martin Q&A page on FB.  People that are coming to the lake are always asking if there is this or that to do while they are at the lake, especially activities for kids.

My two cents.

The community should strongly consider pickleball courts for the development. What is Pickle ball, a cross between tennis, badmitten and ping pong played on 1/3 the size of a tennis court. Low cost entry for equipment, played with a PB paddle and wiffle ball. Sport is growing at a rate of 20% a year. Great for older folks that still want an active lifestyle.

They are very much like a Frisbee.  You can play with 3; driver, mid and putter.  A sterter set is about 20.00.  There are courses in Alex City, Opelika, and Elmore.  Each disc has it's own characteristics, different discs for different cercumstances.

The Opelika Sportsplex has a nice disc golf course and a Pickleball complex.  Land without access to the water is probably not in high demand.  How about a Lake Martin Sportplex?

There is some type of disc golf at the Alex City Sportsplex.

Alex City Sportplex has a 9 hole course.

Opelika Sportplex has a 21 hole course.

Elmore has a 9 hole course.

A tournament quality course off of the hwy 63 corridor would draw PDGA tour level events.
