Or is it the Tallapoosa River?

It is Lake Martin just north of the bridge, in the Sturdivant area. The lake extends several miles up the river channel from there actually.  The lake iw 31 natical miles from the Shoals (headwaters) of the lake to the dam.

What Lifer said. Though it is north of the 280 bridge, it's still below Irwin Shoals, so it's considered "Lake Martin."

Thanks!

Google maps (fwiw) labels the water downstream from Irwin Shoals as Tallapoosa River for quite a ways ... even the Coley Creek Road bridge area.

Google is wrong.  Irwin Shoals is the headwaters.  It looks and feels like river but is in fact Lake Martin and falls under LM guidelines for shoreline management, but there is very little up that way but nature so most folks stay away.  The lake is defined by the 491msl and if you were to ever venture up that way you will see that there is quite a difference in elevation below the shoals (lake) and above the shoals (river).

Y'all remember when Lifer posted "Google is wrong" and was never heard from again?   Seriously, the 491 msl note is a great way of explaining the actual boundaries of "Lake Martin." (Though I guess it could be argued that ALL of Lake Martin is also the Tallapoosa, if one believes that an impoundment on a river is still technically the river, especially if the actual river contines below the dam.)

Good point BAJ.  We do refer to things as up river or down river and river channel.  Never thought of it like that but we are just a wide spot in the river...lol.

Reminds me of what James, a wise old black gentleman who worked for the beverage distributor my wife worked for when we first moved to Montgomery in 1983 said when discussing Lake Martin.  He referred to it as "the backwaters of the Tallapoosa River".

Noticed all phase 1 lots are under contract or a few pending.
