Have to say I was surprised that they dominated the 4th quarter.  I saw that Saban told Kirby Smart when they met midfield, "You kicked our a$$ in the 4th quarter."  As one who doesn't really have a dog in this hunt I was semi-happy to see UGA win and Kirby Smart to get that monkey off his back of never having beaten Saban.  I suspect this will be a frequent matchup over the next several years until Saban retires.  Was good to see a defensive battle as both teams are wicked good on that side of the ball.  Was also impressed with Bennett recovering the way he did instead of folding.  And despite the two interceptions, Bryce Young showed why he won the Heisman.  Now if he could only go to the Steelers I would be really happy.  Great rivalry, great game......couldn't have asked for more.

The UGA offense needed to reward their defense in the fourth quarter for keeping them in the game for so long.  Nick loses twice to former assistants in one season.  Could he possibly be thinking that there is more to life at age 70 than coaching 18-22 yo's?  I think he still has his house on Lake Burton or did he sell?

Anyways, congrats to the Dawgs and enjoy the parade in Athens on Saturday!

He still owned it a couple of years ago when I was there with some friends.  Apparently he built two homes, his and one on spec.  Word was he lost his shirt on the spec home.  Semi-funny story.  The friends of mine that had a house on Burton were motoring around when Saban's house was being built.  They stopped and were walking around the partially built house when in comes Saban.  Apparently he didn't say a word, crossed his arms and gave them the stink eye so they left.  Very strange way to treat neighbors on the lake. If it had been me I would have said hello, given them a tour and then sent them on their way.  But then again, I am not Nick Saban.  Not much of a fan of Lake Burton.  Very pretty setting but far too small, too busy and the water is much colder than Lake Martin.  But lots of nice homes owned by Ga Power execs.

Damn, those linemen are big dudes. That was a fun game to watch. Glad to see Georgia win after the poor showing in the SEC championship game.

Imagine if teachers received money like Saban to teach 18 and 19 year old kids.

Well when teachers can generate $175M in revenue for the school I suspect they might have a leg to stand on compared to Saban.  Unitil then, not so much.  Having said that, I believe research scientists in colleges that generate a lot of grant money are pretty well compensated and don't have to teach.  Research assistants are paid peanuts.

Bankrupt the education system - sounds like a plan, not to mention the massive property tax increases that would have to be created to cover the costs.

But the coaches aren't the ones the revenue providers (fans) come to watch.  How many jerseys do you see with the coach's name and number? It is the indentured servants (players) who generate all those shekels, but changing the system and paying them based on their perceived contribution to the revenue stream would ruin the game, with amateurs becoming professionals, and unhappiness and jealousy between the sports intensified.

With that being said, the coach is the puppetmaster who puts together and trains the group of revenue producers who then generate interest by winning games, trophies, individual awards, and so forth.  So, in a pure business sense the coach is probably worth the money being paid.

Finally, what seems to be lost in all of this is the reason students attend college is supposed to be to get an education.

If teachers could pick the students that they wanted to teach their success rate would probably be closer to Saban's.

Yep.  The most highy paid are the engineers that design things and get patents that the school owns and creates revenue streams with licrnsed use or out right sell to others.  Also a huge portion fo the coaches salary isn't paid by taxpayers but through guarenteed sponserships.

I tend to go with the basic concept that people are paid what someone thinks they are worth.  The coaches are the ones that identify and recruit players to the school against some very stiff competition.  The coaches are the ones that train them and give them the skills to perform at the highest levels.  The coaches are the ones that review game films and develop the offensive and defensive schemes and calls the plays during the game.

So yes, I agree that the players are the ones on the field but everything that happens to get them to that point is on the shoulders of the coaches, especially the head coach.  Saban gets that much from Alabama because of the revenue generated by the football program and the reality that there are tons of other Div I schools that would pay him that much to move there and make them $175M in revenue.

Yes, the good old University of Dayton as evidenced by the chart below.

In every competition there is a winner and a loser and it was Georgia's night to win.  They outplayed Alabama.  As much as Saban hates to lose, I think he was okay losing to Kirby.  Losing 3 key players, one before and 2 last night didn't help the game for Alabama.  What I liked was that Saban modeled good sportsmanship, which seems to be getting hard and harder to find.

With regard to Saban's salary, the sports teams bring a lot of money into the University.  Saban and his wife are very involved in the community and in chariable endeavors.  That's why I have laughed when people have said over the past few years that Saban would take another coaching job- they are deeply ingrained in the community, he has a tremendous recruiting record, he has a primo facility and he gets paid a huge sum of money, with bonus' to bring certain trophies home.  The only thing that has puzzled me is his Mercedes dealerships - I don't know if they are tax write-offs or if he bought into them for his kids.  It can't be because he needs more money.

These indentured servants, Mr. H, can negotiate significant NIL contracts for themselves now.  Even high schoolers are now eligible for NIL money.  This landscape along with the transfer portal has to make coaching at this level tremendously taxing.  Does Nick still want to do it at his age now?  Who knows, but it would not surprise me that he announces a retirement date and ala Coach K (Duke) stay involved in Alabama athletics, fund raising, and campus improvement.

I am 81 years old and have been an Alabama fan and supporter since childhood. In my younger years my wife and two young sons followed the team all over the South, and when I bought a new van, we traveled to see them defeat Penn State in a crucial game many years ago. At one time we were on our way to Texas A&M when we heard on the radio that the game had been cancelled due to "tornado warnings". You did a good job acknowledging his coaching tenure at  Alabama, noting that both he and his wife Terry are very involved in so much more than just "football" at the University and the city of Tuscaloosa. He cares about his players and has been instrumental in the development of young athletes, leading many to successful careers in football and providing means for them to become successful professional athletes as well as preparing them to become vauled members of "society".

Was that the infamous "goal line stand" game.  Penn State was 1st and goal form like the 1 yard line and Bama held and didn't allow a score to win the game.  That was a hell of a game.

Yeah, that was it. Really made the long trip worthwhile.
