Unbelievable hail damage about 2:30 am Sunday morning.  We weren't there at the time but neighbors called with busted windshields and sunroofs, roof damage, broken windows, etc.  When we arrived 10 hours later to  check things out, there was still hail the size of ping pong balls on the ground.  The trees and bushes were stipped of vegetation to the extent you couldn't even see the road.  A collosal mess.

Wow, we had dime size hail in our area of Sandy Creek.  Sounds like we dodged that bullet.

You were lucky MM.  We had golfball size at my place in Manoy.  Several vehicles exposed and no damage though so I am asumming the roof is good.

What does insurers cover?  Never had metal roof and interested in your experience.

Insurance should cover 100% of you metal roof.

In the reality I live in, a roof replacement is prorated as to the useful life period minus deductible.  Hardly free and if they pay 50% I'm lucky.  So let me rephrase my question,  if it does not leak what would push it into the replace area?

Sorry to report that insurance doesn't come close. I had my metal deck roof blow off a few months ago.  Insurance would only pay $30K of  the $40K low bid.  I have NEVER had an insurance company pay what it actually costs to fix a covered repair. Never. While it is better than nothing do not expect a claim to be fully covered. They are scumbags.

While USAA rates are not the cheapest, service and level of coverage when a claim does have to be filed is among the best. Before we sold our house a couple years ago we had a roof repair service come out to look at a couple things that we knew needed doing before putting it on the market. He looked over the roof and said "you have hail damage". We were surprised at that but called USAA and they sent out an adjustor who agreed and after all was said and done we had a brand new roof, to include fixing the things that originally caused us to consult the roofer, and had an extra $5600 to boot.

i do worry that their relaxation of the rules to join is going to eventually dilute the owner base (we the members own USAA) by allowing anyone with the remotest military connection to join. Originally it was military officers, then military enlisted, then family member, and now who knows who else.

What reason did they give you for not covering the full cost less the deductible? Did you upgrade it? Your HO is either Actual Cash Value which depreciates the roof less the deductible or Replacement Coverage which pays the full claim less the deductible. Or, do you cover less than 80% of the value of the dwelling? Covering less than 80% of the value reduces your particial claim like a roof.

They mostly covered the cost of the new shingles (except we upgraded to composite shingles for around $800) but the interior work (removing popcorn ceiling and repairing some damaged drywall) they would reject certain cost items that all the contractors included in their cost estimate.  On the deck roof they did pretty much the same thing.  I had multiple bids just for the R&R to original condition and the lowest was $40K, the rest were around $60K.  The insurer would only pay $30K (including recaptured depreciation once the work was done).

They just kept claiming that a bunch of line items that were in all the estimates were magically included in other tasks.  I just got tired of the back and forth, which is exactly what they do.  Interestingly they paid the entire cost for the initial covering of our roof but then when we gave them an estimate from the same contractor they sent to us for the initial work they told us they were adding costs that were not reasonable.  All the contractors included all those costs.  Just insurance company BS.

I don't know if you used your broker who handled the business insurance. If yes, they can put some pressure on the Company. I don't know if you bought it Direct with no agent or used an agent in Alabama. If an agent they can speak to the carrier on your behalf. Put pressure on them...I assumed you used them because they came highly recommended for their service on  your behalf.

If you bought it direct with no agent, you are on your own but I assumed you saved money on the premium.

You can have an attorney write a letter...or contact the Alabama Dept Insurance.

For $10,000, I would go after them.

Years ago, my son was driving station wagon pulling a trailer with a sailfish. He was on vacation while in med school in New Hampshire.

While turning a corner the trailer touched the corner of a SUV's bumper that was parked illegally sticking out into the intersection. It was a new Explorer. The police came and ticketed the owner for illegal parking and filed a report that their was no damage. There was no exchange of Inurance info.

A month later, I received a letter from the owner's carrier requesting reimbursement for replacing the bumper.  I wrote them a letter and enclosed the police report that showed no damage and refused to pay them.

A month went by and I received another letter requesting the name of my insurance carrier. I knew that if I provided the name, my Company would probably pay the claim and raise my rates. So, I wrote a letter refusing to furnish them with my Insurer and reminded them it was a felony to file a false claim.

Before sending it, I called a neighbor who was an attorney to read it to him. He said to let him send it on his letterhead as a favor. Bottomline...never heard from the Insurance company again.

I've litigated with insurance companies in my business and won both times.  But the real winner was the attorneys.  I don't need the aggravation.

I totally agree with you about USAA.  It's not as personal a company as it once was and it's rates aren't exactly cheap, but I think they are among the most responsive.

USAA was a great insurer for decades but now they are just as sleazy as all the rest.  I’ve insured with USAA since 1966.  Had everything with them till about 2005.  They started admitting everyone, advertising, and cheating, so i changed.  My insurance on coast after Katrina went up 400% in one move, after a $1,200 claim, so i kissed them goodbye.  I just got a quote from them for auto insurance here at the lake…they were 73% higher than my current policy.  No accidents, no claims, no tickets…..I’m done with USAA.
