Good Morning All,
My name is Marty Krauel. My wife Debra and I recently purchased a lot at The Ridge in phase II. I hope to retire this year and begin to build our home. I am interested in speaking with anyone who is in the building process to share ideas and information. We are from California (Please don't hold that against us) and we do not know anyone in the building trades in Alabama. I would like to be "Owner-Builder" and I would like to begin the process of identifying potential sub-contractors.

Thank you for any assistance that you might provide.

ooooooo..... are you in for it! I'd find a reputable builder and skip the general contractor part unless you are a builder. Unless you can pull trades from Birmingham or possibly Auburn many of the subs here are just financing hunting trips. There are exceptions of course and I have found a few great ones but it will definately take you some time.

How did you find Lake Martin?

Thank you for your input. I am not a builder, but my wife and I designed the home we are living in about 15 years ago. I was owner builder on that project and working 40+ hours per week at the time. I hope to be retired and run the building project full time.

We found the lake through our friends Guy and Sue Alexander who live on the lake in Stillwaters. I first visited them about six years ago, and ever since then, I knew where I wanted to retire to. Lake Martin is truly a paradise.

Thats right..if you compete with the local contractors its going to be hard to find a good sub....taken me several calls to get anyone just to answer the phone..

Amen, amen, amen to roswellric. I tried the route that Starman is considering when we built on the lake and it was an extremely frustrating experience. Seriously, don't go there. Good builders and good subs stay very busy. They also work together regularly. Take the time to work your way up the lengthy waiting lists. You won't be sorry.

Most of the rest in the building trades around here are, basically, dabbling in the business. Those subs tend to disappear for awhile after you give them partial payment. For your mental health, Starman, get a lot more advice. That should prevent you from sliding down the slippery slope.

Just stay as far away as possible from Stewart Construction. Sorry to the rest of the patrons of this board who have heard this more than once but when bitten, I bite back with a fury.

Congrats EPK...and bless your heart. Mine is in her pre-teen years, many times lately you could have had her for free...:)

I don't blame you for biting back.........there are so many around here
that think nothing of biting first...sadly, many of them get away with it and move on to bite somebody else.........EVERYBODY, once bitten, should bite back just as hard as you....only way we can even begin to sort out the good guys from the bad...........

Frankly I wouldn't build on Lake Martin. Yep it's nice but highly over rated...no offense anyone. I lived there for 20 yrs and loved the place before over development messed things up
