Can someone please explain to me why all of the hundreds of beautiful Bradford pear trees were removed from the median on 280 just south of Alex City. They were a spectacular sight this time of the year.

I was wondering the same thing the other day as I was driving down that stretch of highway. I am very interested to see if anyone has an answer to this. All I could think of was maybe a disease was affecting them and it was preventative to cut them down.

There were several accidents where cars ran off the road and hit one of those trees and people were killed. Also, I have heard about some rule regarding the size of trees that are allowed in the median of a highway. Those trees had gotten pretty big.

Now that the trees are gone, instead of hitting a tree and killing the driver of one car, now the car can go across the median and into oncoming traffic and kill people in several cars. Isn't that great!

They were in fact cut down on orders of the department of transportation directly related to one or more lawsuits. Personally, I will not miss them. They were pretty for a couple of weeks a year and a hazard the other 50 weeks. In summer they would obscur the veiw of oncoming traffic at some interesctions. They were cut in Sylacauga also.

A link to a local paper with details is provided.

Here is another link were the trees in Sylacauga were discussed at a council meeting. The ones in Sylacauga were more of a visibility issue than the ones in AC apparently.

What about the light poles in the median...I'm sure they are less forgiving than the Bradford pears when run into headon. Another case of how senseless litigation causes poor decision making.

Well, I will tell you what I have read.

Bradford pear trees were introduced this far south without consideration for their growth characteristics. Up north they behave very well, growing at a reasonable pace for their wood and structure development.

But down south they grow too fast , the wood becomes too soft and if not propely pruned early in life will split and become a nusance. Now in the median of a highway this problem of splitting could also become a serious hazard to cars and trucks.

The Crape Myrtles are a much better idea.
