My wife and I find Lake Martin to be a very beautiful area and lake. We are looking to move here very soon. One thing I woud like to kow about the lake is water quality. I have attempted to get information from state agencies but they want to send me a 50 page report that requires a PHD to understand. So in a languauge that I can understand, who can give me some information about the water and fish quality in Lake Martin ?

Thanks.

What other body(s) of water, that you frequent, do you want to use as a comparison?

You can contact the Clean Water Partnership through the office of Alexander City's Mayor, Don McClellan. You can also call Lake Watch of Lake Martin. They are among the many members of the Clean Water Partnership - Middle Tallapoosa River Basin Stakeholders Group.

All of the above will tell you that Lake Martin is the cleanest lake in the Southeastern U.S. Count yourself as very fortunate to have discovered it. Welcome, and do your very best to keep it clean.

Beg to differ, Lake Burton in North Ga. would put Lake Martin to shame as far as water , have to put LM and Lake Lanier in the same class.

you have no proof to back up your statement now because it simply isn't so. Later when Ga. gets through screwing up the Tallapoosa you might be right. If you think there is a similarity between Lake Martin and Lanier then you need to change your daily tonic.

Lakeman, where is your backup?. The only thing that LM has over Lanier is less population, and that is changing very fast. After all ,the stock holders at Russell & The Southern Co are looking at dollars, ask Elmer Harris. Next time you go to N. Ga. take a look at Lake Burton. If you can afford the price of a place there LM will be history. It`s like comparing a Yugo to a 63 split window Corvette.

I think the original inquiry was about the " quality " of water and fishing which are very good on Lake Martin. The tests are easily accessible to the public. The one known polluting has been addressed. I'm not saying Burton isn't clean, only that Martin is full of quality water and fishing.

Lakeman, have you ever been to Lake Burton?

Nope.

Lake Burton is too small! It is a clean and pretty lake but it's like Carters lake in N. GA. Small , difficult to access and full of rich snobs. Sorry JIM= just my humble opinion.

Easy now, For a mere pittance of 5-$750,000 Jim could have a nice 1/4 acre lot to build on.... He might leave if he finds this out.

I originally didn't want to bring Lanier or any other lakes into the picture until Newcomer had a body of water to use as a comparison.

But, since GA lakes have been brought into the pix, okay, here's my 2-cents.

Yes, Lanier may be nice and close-by, even Allatoona being only 15-mins away, but lets look at the water itself:
- when people are swimming a few feet under the water, very tough to make-out even the outlines of the body let alone the color of the swimming suit.
- have to replace swimsuits each year due to discoloration. Primary color suits turn - green. Colors fade as well.
- acidity level "may" be acceptable by EPA but why do the Lanier/Allatoona marina boat-sellers state to bottom-paint due to hull-blistering after just 1-year. Even better is the sellers state to let the mfg. warranty take care of it a few months prior to expiration.

Now for LM:
- tough to sneek-up on someone and scare them 'cuz they can easily identify who is swimming-up to them under the water, sometimes up to 8-10' down. Doesn't count when a rain has just occurred but thats primarily in the main channel.
- the swimsuits we used from a couple years ago when first visiting LM still have lotsa color left, outside of spilled suntan lotion (and beer).
- worst item to the boat is some tough stains at the water line that come-off easily with hull cleaner.

So, in my opinion, Newcomer, the water quality at Lake Martin is exceptional, compared to most other southeastern lakes.

I want to thank all who have replied to my original inquiry. It's good to see there are folks concerned about the quality of the lake where they live. Other lakes I have fished are Oconee, Lanier, Hartwell and West Point Lakes in Georgia, and Wedowee and Logan Martin lakes in Alabama. Any comparisons that you would like to give would be appreciated.

Welcome Newcomer! It sounds like your latest post maybe centered more on the fishing aspects of the Lake. I do know that Lake Martin has great fishing, but I am not familiar with the fishing on the other Lakes you mention. I would suggest that you go to the fishing section of the Forum and post your question there for some expert comparrisons

Remember with catch and release there are no liars. That fish will one day possibly be as big as you claim it when you caught it.

What JIM does not realize, is that people come to Lake Martin not because they need to drop $$$ to feel better, but because LM is a beautiful lake with friendly people. The atmosphere of LM makes it by far one of the most relaxing bodies of water in the southeast. I think the original posting was about the quality of LM, so let's get back to that topic.

If you want to talk Georgia lakes, let's talk about Lake Oconee and Reynolds Plantation. I don't see FOUR golf courses designed by four top designers on the shores of Lake Burton.

But hey, thats just my 2 pennies!
