Anyone elses taxes go up 110%? I thought about five years ago, we were reappraised at 100% value and now after that little pontoon boat took pictures presumedly of all houses on the lake, we get another hugh increase! Have an appointment with the Tallapoosa County Board of Equalization, but that will probably not reduce the value of our house.

I know our taxes are less than other states, but if this keeps up, in 10 years we won't be able to afford to live here. Moved from Florida to get away from high taxes!

I feel for you and please do not take what I am about to state the wrong way. (Just an opinion) I don't know where you are going to go to in 10 years. Like stated in the early thread, Arkansas is the only state with lower property tax. It is not that much lower than Alabama. Personally, I am just tickled with how low the property tax is on my Lake Martin property. Yes, a jump in appraisal rate is a double edged sword. It means you property is worth more, but your taxes will be higher. A 10% increase is not as bad as a 22% appraisal value increase in my current home state property over the past year alone. I find it hard to comprehend what the person from Missouri. (Have to Show-Me that one) Their school tax is $5.00 per hundred dollars of property value. Wow!

Another thing to think about is that your property tax is a deduction on both your Federal and State Income taxes. Sales tax is not.

I hate to see anyone have to loose their home because they can not afford the taxes. Don't know what the solution is other than to raise luxury taxes and taxes on cigarettes and alcoholic beverages. Alabama also is one of the five lowest States on tobacco taxes. Then all of us suffer the expense that tobacco related diseases cost us in health insurance and etc. There are plenty of people smarter than I am that may know of some solutions. I am listening.

Feb, my taxes on the lake went up one hundred ten percent, not ten percent.

And yes, they are very low compared to New York or Florida.

Bur we love it here and will stay!

I miss understood you. That is a big time increase. Thought you were saying a 10% increase in property appraised value.

But does that mean it went up form $25 to $55? Percentages can fool ya. Now if your property was under assessed for a few years then you just got a break. If not go appeal like crazy. I find smaller communities boards of equalization are made up of folks like us - not bureucrats, pretty cooperative and reasonabe.Good Luck!

As roswellric suggested, I have dealt with the Tallapoosa County Property Appraisers office on several occasions over the years and have found them to be very reasonable to work with. Two different times I have requested and received an adjustment on lake front property tax. All I did was a little research on comps in the area, explained the lack of appreciable improvements to the property and related them to the percentage of increase.

There have been a couple of times that I have been denied adjustments, but, I must admit, I didn't have a very good case to present.

Take your best shot!

I just got back from looking at some property in Florida..
My taxes went up 62 percent this year...but still only at 732 compared to several thousand on the place I looked at in FL..

We all hate raises ..but...when it doesnt really amount to much...hard to gripe (for me anyhow)...

Just imagine if you cannot file homestead...us weekenders are getting hammered....but, just because the county wants full time residents doesn't mean we are going to budge...
