Collegefootballnews.com has the "highly-tauted" Auburn Tigers choking yet again and missing a New Year's Day bowl again this year. They also have Bama making a bowl appearance again. What do ya'll think? Will AU continue basking in mediocrity? Will Bama start its march back to greatness? Will both continue to perform below expectations?

"AU continue basking in mediocrity". Just exactly what has Bama been "basking" in lately?

LOL Something a bit worse than mediocrity. . .most call it probation. However, 2001 was a 10 win season as was 99 (SEC Championship). It has been a while since AU saw those numbers.

LOL yeah, but that involves shaving one's legs. Guys in Tuscaloosa arent too crazy about that idea. Surely AU recruits foreigners for the swim team.

I believe it was Eric Ramsay who initiated that saying. And I do remember so vividly how much Albert Means had to do with winning at Alabama. . . oh wait he didnt.

We werent on probation when the Albert Means ordeal happened. Had we been in the past? Yes. That was a minor infraction that had long since been taken care of. You can hug Phillip Fulmer's neck if you want. . .its in the past and we are moving forward. LOL I was merely asking opinions on this coming year. No sense talking about the past, it would be a rather lop-sided conversation dont you think?

As I remember what the NCAA said at the time they said Bama was looking down the barrel of a gun at the DEATH PENALTY they said you were cheating WHILE on probation.
" No sense talking about the past, it would be a rather lop-sided conversation dont you think?"
Yea ONLY when it is KIND to BAMA should we talk about the past !!!
What would the past be with out all that CHEATING???!

Apparently they recruit the best swimmers, regardless of nationality. Maybe Alabama should try that, since it seems to work.

Well, Personally I would like to see both teams have a stellar year so the hmm final game will be verrry fun! War Eagle!! How many Alabama fans do you know who would say something positive like that?

Here are some numbers you might find interesting: of the 30 swimmers on the Auburn Men's team, three are from another country; on the Auburn Women's team, four of 26 are foreign.

On the Alabama Men's team, seven of 22 are foreign; for the women, three of 22.

In other words, before anyone blasts Auburn for recruiting foreigners, perhaps they should take a look at their own team first.

How in the world did this get to swimming, how many are on the football teams, 75%. would be a good guess.

1. This "got to swimming" because lamont mentioned swimming, and SBSigmaPi's response to him was swimming-related. (It's not all that complicated.)

2. 75% of what are on football teams?

My bad folks. Should have known better than to participate in an Auburn/Alabama conversation. I know from experience these topics are better suited for the Insiders boards. Was just having a little fun although ,our swimming team is phenominal.

My comment on swimming was that I hope they get foreigners, but it is kind of Un-American for guys to shave their legs.

But it is still SWIMMING. Who cares. Alabama is great at gymnastics, but I wasnt talking about that. I was talking about football. The sport where Auburn is always the guest, rarely a bridesmaid, and was half of a bride once about 47 years ago. The sport where GA Tech has more SEC titles than AU even though they have been in the ACC for years.

But hey, if swimming is your cup of tea, swim your butts off. But I thought this was a football state. I was simply asking for predictions (or your thoughts on CFN's predictions) on this coming season. I guess that is a touchy subject.

Hmmmmm, was it not you several posts back saying there is no sense talking about the past....... and now going back 47 years. And, as I recall, it is Bama who has been the "guest" in 3 of the last 4 years; even in your own house.

Name:   SBsigmapi - Email Member

Date:   7/2/2004 10:15:58 AM

ok, that saying about the guest was a metaphor. I was referring to the age-old saying "always a bridesmaid, never a bride". This saying would not apply to AU as it is rare that they are on the verge of winning a title. Last year they were supposed to be, but that didn't work out. This year they are supposed to be good, but Tubby seems to find a way to play at the opposite end from expectations (when it is good and bad). And as I said in the last line of my previous post, the intention of the initial post was to get people's thoughts on CFN's predictions. I noticed that you still did not give an opinion on it.

This magazine that you're so high on is the SAME publication that foolishly had Auburn ranked Number One this time last year. I find it hard to believe that the staff has suddenly become expert prognosticators, so I'd take anything they predict with a grain of salt.

By the way, you might find that you get better results with your questions if you can manage to post them without a handful of insults added in. If you didn't want this thread to turn into a typical Auburn-Alabama p*ssing contest, then you shouldn't have started one.

You might also want to check your information. CFN (College Football News.com) picked AU to finish 6th last year--still higher than the result, but not number one. It was The Sporting News and the NY Times that picked them at number 1. Also, in my original post I stated 2 things that are true. Any rational AU fan will admit that AU has a long history of relative mediocrity (good years thrown in here and there). At the same time, any rational UA fan will admit that the past several years have seen them fall from glory--and fast. The point is, I was asking for responses on the CFN projections. You gave one of these, thank you. I agree with your sentiments--its just a projection and who knows in the SEC. If I remember right, some of these same "pickers" picked Alabama to be #1 in 2000 (we finished with 3 wins).

You just don’t get it. Find SOME humility. WE ALL know BAMer’s past.
And WE ALL know how it was gained. Logan Young goes all the way back to
Bryant.
Lets just say IF SCRUSHY is found Guilty as charged. How would you like reading his
words if all you ever hear is I made $$$$$$$$$ in 1999 and in 2001
I stole $$$$$$ and oh yea I have 12 National@##$$%%^. Who cares ???? YOU STOLE
IT !!!! WE KNEW IT THEN AND WE KNOW IT NOW…
As for the shaving of legs it would be nice if your girls would give it a try...I would mention how
many years Auburn has owned Tucclooser (in football) but I remember we don’t want to talk
about the PAST.
About your original question. Any writer that wants publicity can write anything positive or negative about the once Powerful tide and make the news. They do it every year. So you would be foolish to place any
Importance on it. I think with the easy schedule Bama has they could finish with a wining record. The same could be said about Auburn and who knows Auburn COULD put it all together be very good. As they do have the talent. Have a nice day . I am off to the LAKE for the 4th.

You think Alabama got everything they got from cheating? That is putting a dark light on alot of players past and present that you know nothing about. I dont think that Auburn is made of a bunch of cheaters simply because Eric Ramsay was one. That would be an invalid assumption. Cheating takes place EVERYWHERE, and you can bet that with Lowder's hand in it that this includes AU. Teams are not, however, dominated by players that cheat. Dont attempt to tear Alabama down simply to try to place their football past at an equal level with AUs. Does me hating Notre Dame give me a right to say that the only reason they have so many titles is because they cheat? (they too have been on probation in the past). Dont be ridiculous. The last few lines of your post were accurate. Noone knows what will happen this coming season. Regardless of the outcome, however, remember that on both sides of the football on every Saturday, 11 STUDENT ATHLETES will line up against one another. These are boys. Most are honest. Many are very intelligent. Some are not either. But they are just boys, dont insult the character of the BOYS of the past. Most dont deserve that.

Why is it that Alabama people are willing to count any and all of the polls they've won as a National Championship, yet they'll only let Auburn count the one AP poll they won? And, they'll always mentioned that it was a split title that year, while ignoring the fact that almost all of their own titles were also split?

And, Auburn people, why do you let them do it? Don't you know enough about football to correct the Bama people? Why do you leave it to an outsider who doesn't like either one of your teams?

LOL Valid point. The fact is everyone that shares a national title claims to be national champions---rightfully so. I am sure that LSU and USC will both tell you that they are defending national champions. So counting them for both sides is fine with me. Not counting them for either side would still leave an obvious advantage for UA. It may be that AU doesnt want to argue too much about split titles being that their only one is a split. UA is willing to point this out as often as possible because 1/2 of a national title just has some humor quality regardless of which team you are referring too. AU actually has every right to claim that title, but the split is still a big red button that is easy to push when you are a fan of the university.

Alabama splits:
1978 (with USC, who beat them at Legion Field that year.)
1973 (with Notre Dame, who beat them in the Sugar Bowl that year; there was no post-bowl vote in the UPI poll.)
1965 (with Michigan St.)
1964 (with Arkansas and Notre Dame; Alabama and Arkansas both lost their bowl game, while Notre Dame didn't play bowl games back then.)
1961 (with Ohio St.)
1941 (with Minnesota, Texas; more on this one below.)
1934 (with Minnesota)
1926 (with Stanford)
1925 (with Dartmouth)

1992 and 1979 were not shared. Two are three of the 13 claimed are not mentioned in the NCAA Record Book (which has the champions from the AP (1936-present), UPI (1950-present, but it's called the USA Today poll now), Football Writers Association of America (1950-present), National Football Foundation (1950-present), the Dickinson System (1924-40), the Dunkel System (1929-present), the Williamson System 1932-63), the Litkenhouse System (1934-72) and the Athletic Foundation (1883-1982.)

The 1941 Championship was given by some obscure group in Texas following the Cotton Bowl, in which Alabama beat Texas A&M 29-21, despite getting just one first down the entire game. Alabama finished #20 in the AP poll that year, behind four other SEC teams; only the greediest, most delusional fans claim this one as a legitimate title.

Do you happen to know the years of the other two claimed National Championships? They're not listed in any of my reference books, but I don't have any Alabama-specific books.

There arent 13 nor does anyone claim 13. There are 12. This does count the one in 1941, but you have to remember, at that time the system was what it was. Dont count it if it makes you feel better or if you think it makes your team look better. Dont count any of them if it would make you feel better. Just the same, I think I'll count all 12 and continue to flaunt that in front of anyone who refuses to respect it.

From what I gather, Alabama fans are expecting a sub-par season. Considering the enormous loss of players since last season, a disappointing season seems likely. However, I think Shula needs to go to a bowl game to keep the fans happy, and I think he'll somehow come through.

As for Auburn, after last year's hopes went down the drain so quickly, fans aren't willing to put that much expectation on this year's team. I think that Auburn may surprise a few people, however, if the replacements on the front 7 play well. If Auburn beats LSU, I'd say they are a lock for the SEC West title.

First, you're wrong; I HAVE heard more than one fan claim 13 championships. That doesn't mean they are right, but they do it, and even you cannot be egotistical enough to think that you and only you speak for all Alabama fans.

As for the 1941 title, claim it if it validates your meager existence; the fact that you claim a National Championship in a year that your team was no better than FIFTH in the conference speaks volumes. I wouldn't think that you would be so insecure about your team's place in history.

And please note that 10 of the 12 you claim are SHARED titles. SHARED! When your rival shares a title, you laugh at them; when your team shares a title, it's perfectly OK. Hypocritical much? Or is this just an example of the double-standard that I hear Auburn fans complain about? I think I see their point now.

Sorry to sink to your level; I tried to be polite and respectful and informative, but you had to start insulting me because I didn't see things your way. Typical Alabama fan. Go back to the playground and pretend you're the king; those of us in the real world will move along now.

Is it more childish to claim an official stat or deny its validity? Is it more childish to list stats in attempt to dilute the tradition of an institution or to support it? Sure their are titles that Alabama has shared in the past. Some, you could argue, they did not even deserve a share of--others, it could be argued that they deserved to own entirely. Regardless, fact is fact. Attempting to construe those fact to minimize the tradition of an institution is classless and tacky.

What difference could it make? They were stolen !!! Or BOUGHT AND PAYED FOR!!
“I think I'll count all 12 and continue to flaunt that in front of anyone who refuses to respect it. “
You carry the badge of a flaunter with pride and that sums up a BAMER. Respect is earned not
Bought !!
One BAMER was on the radio yesterday SQUALING about the kid at Miami (WILLIS?)That has
been charged 12 times and was out on PROBATION when he committed another crime. The BAMER
feels that the courts should find a way to lock him up.
DAYSHAVU The NCAA decided they had enough of BAMER and now you want to blame Phil
Fulmer for ALL your problems. He repeatedly followed the rules along with Spurrer trying to make you stop cheating and finally decided to make a case the NCAA could not ignore. I know I know it was ONLY A HAND FULL each year that cheated. (WHAT AN EXCUSE!!!)
Cheaters NEVER WIN !
Its been along time coming but HE WHO Laughs LAST, LAUGHS the hardest.
HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT BUTTON?????

How is AU laughing hardest? They seem so intent on beating BAMA that they even tried to one-up BAMA's problems. Think about it, with the recent BAMA troubles, the war-chickens should have been able to out-recruit UA easily. But just when signing day neared they said hey BAMA anything you can screw up. . .we can screw up worse. They poured fuel on the coaching controversy fire and got out recruited by a team on probation. BAMA is pulling out of their funk and AU is falling in. Auburn had every opportunity to shed their inferiority and yet they confirmed it. Getting pissed off and calling BAMA cheaters does nothing to change that. You can all reply to this and throw around more fruitless arguements all you want, it doesn't matter to me. The numbers 12, 21, and 51 will still be there and you can do nothing to change it. Once again, I only asked for predictions--let the little man syndrome go.

GEEEE , I like this BUTTON PUSHING . It really works. Again we should only address what BAMER WANTS to talk about . AS :LONG AS HE SHE IT IS PUSHING THE BUTTONS.
Back up a step or two. Recheck your figures on this RECUTING CLASS. With the BAMERs repoting. It LOOKED like thay had a BIG year. But truth is about 16 non qualifers shot your class in the foot.. EVERY year we have to hear what a great job BAMER had recuiting and how poorly AUBURN did. But take a look at WHO is LOADED with tallent and WHO is all ready looking for excuses
Yea count ANY number you want. We ALL know they were stolen and now THE WORLD KNOWS THE TRUTH!!!!! buton , buton. HA HA HA !!!

You arent pushing MY buttons. I am a fan of THE UNIVERSITY. You are a fan of Auburn--how sad for you. Your tradition consists of living in the shadows of THE UNIVERSITY. As for our recruiting class. . .part of having reduced scholarships is over signing. You dont have to take my biased opinion on the rating of recruits. Check your sources. Everyone has UA in the top 25. NO ONE has AU there. Maybe its the coaching problem. . .maybe its that darn shadow.

So how many on that list didn't qualify? I know of three of the nine that Newburg mentions, including the "jewel of the class." Counting the other two that I'm sure of... well, let's just say that anyone who would count guys who aren't coming would probably count national championships awarded by any old fly-by-night organization. Whatever it takes to make you feel important; you sure can't fall back on academics.

Also, you need to look up the definition of "NO ONE." Here's a link to an organization that DOES include Auburn in the Top 25. And since 25 (the maximum allowed) of the 26 players qualified, their ranking is more impressive, since it doesn't include a slew of players who will never set foot on campus.

One last post and I am done. All of you AU fans did exactly what I figured you would do. You all have such an inferiority complex and are so insecure that you couldnt answer the question that was asked. I personally think that AU will have a decent season. Will they live up to their potential? I doubt it, but I figure an upper teir, non-BCS bowl could be expected. You people need to wake up and smell the coffee. If you dont want to be viewed as inferior, get rid of Tubby, win some SEC titles, and, when you have the talent, do something with it (this would include running the wishbone this year. . .which I doubt we'll see). I know that all of you will say that you arent inferior, and that you are ranked higher in the polls, and all of that. I will choose not to reply. None of you can see the forest for the trees anyway. As for the academic issue, as you can see from the link I provided, Auburn University is the only U. in the state that is in serious academic trouble. I have a lot of friends who are very worried right now because of this. They are all grads or soon to be grads of AU and have the possibility of their degree being worthless. The SACS is for real this time. Probation is a rare step for them and AU is there. I love the rivalry, but if yall loose accreditation, the third saturday in October will once again be elevated to the top where it belongs. Yall should also look into over hauling your board of trustees. . .they are tearing you apart.

Maybe you should read things before you link them:

"The academic integrity of Auburn University is not in question. The SACS action that resulted in the one-year probation included nothing about the institution's academic quality."

Oh wait, I forgot: you're the guy who uses made up facts to support his ego.

The SACS mess is all about administration, specifically the micro-managing by the board of trustees; if it helps clean out those clowns, then I'm behind SACS all the way.

As all can see in a previous reply, the SACS issue-- important as it is-- has NOTHING to do with academics, no matter how often you say it.

Along the same lines, no matter how often you say "I'm a better person than anyone from Auburn because Bear Bryant coached there more than 20 years ago," it's still not true. If all you can base your self-worth on is the past football accomplishments of a school that you didn't even attend, you're a sad case.

I'll gove you credit for one thing-- you turned me into an Auburn supporter (but NOT a fan.) I have now experienced what they have been saying for all these years, and I can't blame them for the way they act; the arrogance displayed by you Alabama fans is enough to push anyone over the edge.
