I have a gripe. Why does the water level guideline say 490 and the lake be at 488 this time of year. Can't the dam folks do their dam job and hold onto our water?

This is normal for this time of year. 490 is summer pool. After July 4th. the water begins to drop toward winter pool which is somewhere around 480+/- a couple feet depending on what's going on with the weather. The water wars may change some of this but we will have to wait and see. Personally I like the winter pool. Repairs and fishing is very good. Peace.

Personally, I would love to see the water stay at 490 all year... And, I'd also like to see the SEC cancel football to prolong the boating season. Each has about the same chance of happening, so, we just keep on keeping on!

Ok, most of the responses seem to accept the lower water level as a fact of life. However, if the rule is 490, why lower the water level early? Follow the rule and I can live with it too. Drop it early, ahead of the rule and I still say the dam folks are not doing their job.

488 is ideal for hanging out at the beaches around the lake. I love this time of year!!

Bigwake I understand your being flustered but it is a fact with the water level. APCO manages the lake this way to satisfy downstream needs, flood control, dam repair and such. They are doing their job. It's better to have the gradual drawdown than to have it down over night. This way you can manage your boating time and judge when to take out. I remember Opel. One day 480, next morning 490. Talk about a mess. Enjoy the lake as it is because changes are on the way.

Do you know any recent news about possible changes?

Water levels are very much determined by rain fall. We almost always see dry and hot days toward the end of the summer. But if rainfall is high, lake will stay around 488-490. Have seen it full pool in October and in January. That is why I no longer store my boat on the bottom...floated it off and I loss my styrofoam. Not to mention awaking at home at 2am during a downpour and wondering "did I tie my boat to the dock".

This is discussed extensively every couple of months. I don't believe that 490' is ever the goal of Alabama power. On the water level page the following is noted:

Full Pool = 490.0 MSL (Mean "Average"Feet Above Sea Level)
Full pool is the highest normal level before flood stage.

"Highest normal level before flood stage"....... Now, it really doesn't make sense to maintain the level at the last possible level before flood. In my experience. 488-489 is really the norm during the height of summer.

It officially starts a slow drop after Labor Day. So, get ready.

You are located in the northern end of the lake the water level runs about 6 inches higher in the fall when the lake is being drained....
