I've been checking the lake level via APC's 800# and have noticed that the lake is up a whopping 18 in. (so far) since late Wed. night!

Before Ivan, they were dropping it fast with 4 turbines running most of the time a few days prior to the storm. I must commend APC for the tough job of trying to provide proper flood control during times like this. I notice they have cut way back on releases today -- I feel sure to reduce the load already on the Alabama River.

Just for a little trivia, when they were running 4 turbines they got up to releasing water at 18,500 cu. ft. /sec. That equates to roughly 139,000 gal./sec. or 1.2 million lbs. of water/sec.!!

Now everybody had something smart to say when I did the math....

Say what?

What are you saying? This is a very straight forward calculation.

I know I did the same thing at a question posed for how many gallons in a 10 ft drop on the 40,000 acre lake - got some flack about math! Just a little joke I'm sure.

Well you might look back and think I was one of the ones that gave you some "flack" because I said you needed some calculus and the right function to get a volume of a 10' drop.

However, I was not critcizing at all, to the contrary all I was saying was that one would need more info about the lake bed (than I think any of us have) to answer that question.

I do hope your place faired well through the storm. We are also in the Sandy Creek area; I saw where your power was back, ours appears to still be down (answering machine) hopefully back soon as we are planning to go down today.

Our stuff was OK - thank God. I just had to haul lots of limbs. Put an extra small line on the boat besides the regular stout lines. Guess which one held....

Actually you don't need calculus to make the gallon calculation - I assumed the contour of the 40,000 acres was the same as it went down. If you wanted to throw in the slope of the lake then you would need an integral but how would you write the equation? Boggles my mind far removed from my calculus days......

Hope you made out OK!
