I used Dark Alexander and was very pleased. They are on 280 and have built many houses on the lake.

Please let me give you the facts on the above message. Dark Alexander had three law suits in the courts in 2002 due to poor home building. They are the only builder in the area with this reputation.

You are going to have to work hard for this one. There are no "production" builders in the area, only "custom". This means it will take a year to build your house. I would get a list of the AL homebuilders association members, check out the Southern Living builders, local bankers, Heck I'd even talk to reputable home inspectors. Ride through the Ridge and walk the homes being built. Go talk to owners that recently built - they are generally very helpful.
If you own a lot you'd better be careful of the balance sheet of the builder you select. The worst nightmare would be to have a house partially finished, you've paid the builder and he didn't pay the subs or suppliers. I would talk to realtors but they are reluctant because of all the liability scares. If you know one well it would help. Good luck! It's worth it! Finest lake in the country!

A lot depends on the area of the lake where your lot is. If you are in a Russell development, you might check with their Architectural Review Committee for recommendations. Builders tend to work only on one side of the lake or another - they don't like to get too spread out. Talk to the lumber yards, concrete companies and home inspectors. They may not volunteer whose bad (for liability purposes), but I'd bet their reaction to a list of names that you put before them will be very telling! What part of the Lake is your lot on?

I had a very good experience with Ballard Construction, the company dredged our slough, reshaped the bank and put in rip rap rock. The company works on many of the developments in the area and would be a good resource for your lot clearing needs, at a minimum.
