We pressure washed our wood pier this past weekend. We are looking for recommendations on the best sealant to spray on it. Which is best: Behr, Olympic, Thompson, or what??

Much to the chagrine of my six children, last years spring break was spent cleaning and sealing our 2 docks and multi-level deck. Two coats no less. Taught them alot! First recommendation - paint sealer on with a brush. Anything sprayed on, no matter how many coats, will be gone by mid-summer. The wax based sealer, to be effective, must be applied to all surfaces of the wood including cracks. We have found the only effective way of getting into the splitting is with a soaked brush. Upon the recommendation of Floridian neighbors of ours who have sealed many a deck, their recommendation was Deck Scapes with cuprinol by Sherwin Williams. Evidently, Cuprinol was the key ingredient. I was completely satisfied with the product and will probably won't have to coat again until next year. Hope this helps! I will be interested in other owners recommendations.

Consumer Reports has tested many of these over the years. All these held up longer than 2 years:

Cabot Decking Stain 1480 $24 opaque
Cabot Solid Color 1880 $29 opaque
Wolman Durastain 18146 4 $35 semi.
Akzo Nobel Sikkens Cetol SRD 1708902 $27 semi.

There are others being tested. You can get an on-line subscription reasonably.

I agree with the above e-mail's. A brush will provide the best / longest results.

I use AMTECO. They are the only company that provided sample stains and test results. Their stain has a wood preservative and ultra-violet light protection to reduce fading. I believe, at this time, the factory will only sell to distributers, and long time customers.

I have Sikkens Cetol stain on my decks. Great stuff, but you do need to brush 2 coats of stain....... then a top coat of sealer after 6 months.

After that, a top coat of their sealer every 3-5 years keeps things looking great.

Cabots also makes an excellent product.

Thanks for the good responses. It appears that a brush and plenty of elbow grease are required for the best results.

Does the envrormental agency have guidelines as to what you can use as not to contaminate the water? These rules are very strict, as they should be. I have seen people pressure washing their piers with solvents with no reguard as to what they are doing to the habitat, then put poison on the wood as stain and preserative.
