Ok, so the water is on the way back up towards summer pool. We still have a few days before the idiots converge on us. Fish quick and dust off and oil up the old firearms, get ready for keroke and beer, practice skeet shooting clays shaped like seadoo's and jetski's. We can practice not boating on the weekends while people who don't care about the lake are here. Peace. Hey tennbum see you at C-Toms.

It is rather presumptious and rude to assume that those of us who arent choking on a silver spoon (and therefor have to hold our laketime down to summer weekends) have no respect for the lake or fellow lake goers. I feel that people who have your attitude are as much "what's wrong with the lake" as those who are buzzing docks, wrecklessly driving jetskis, or singing karaoke. I, for one, am very respectful of others while at the lake. We spend much of our time away from everyone else--pulled up on a beach. Remember, this is a public lake that is intended to be enjoyed by everyone, not just the rich property owners that think their _____ don't stink.

okay, i am a new property owner on the lake, plan to retire there in a couple of years and have started my house, however, i too think you were rude, no just down right stupid to think that everyone that is fortunate enough to live on the lake hates the weekenders. they too have a right to use the lake and not all of them are as you protray them. we have enjoyed this paradise for many years and have met many wonderful people there that do not share your beliefs ( thank god). if you think it is so bad, why don't you just leave? maybe you should find a summer home somewhere isolated! Lake Martin is a great place with wonderful people and you should not be the spokesperson for the rest of the state. if the truth were known, you are probably the first to karaoke, drink beer and wake everyone with your little boat. so just relax and maybe you too can see the beauty in the place you call home.

Before I run the risk of being charaterized as presumptious - might I ask you your opinion of Lake Martin property owners? I might surmise from your post that we are something bad, that we are all rich, and possibly a few other charaterizations. Would it be fair to say that a vast majority have worked many years and sacrificed to own a bit of Heaven? That maybe - just maybe if you do the same thing (work hard for years, make sacrifices and invest wisely) that when you get to be lets say in your 50s or 60s that you might have property ownership and a silver spoon to choke on? All of this is not to say that there are not some that have not worked even harder, invested even more wisely and made greater sacrifices and achieved this goal and/or higher goals at an earlier stage in life. I would be willing to bet that the smallest percentage of property owners around Lake Martin would fall into some other category than I have just described. I hope that you do not feel about us the way your post seems to read, and I also hope you avail yourself to achieve what some of the rest of us have been fortunate enough to of accomplished.

Didn't take long for the board to heat up. All it took was a plug and a little rising water. Personally, I am a weekender and property owner. I don't think any one group has a monopoly on rudeness. If a person wants to be immature and disrespectful, he!!, they are going to do it regardless of whether they are a weekender, visitor or homeowner. I, for one, just can't wait for the warm weather and full pool to have the opportunity to be offended again.

First of all, much of your post is absolutely correct. However, you now see how much it sucks to be the victim of a generalization. My opinion does not encompass all property owners. I have several friends with lake property and after law school I plan to have a piece of heaven myself. However, there ARE tons of lake-livers that I do despise. Regardless of how hard you worked or how much you sacrificed to get it, neither money nor property make you better than anyone else out there on that water. Far too often, that tends to be the view of the "HAVE"s. Right now i am in between the have's and the have not's and, therefore, can see both sides. From what I can see, the real OFFENSE that weekenders make is showing up at all. The crowdedness at the lake ticks the property owners off. What they forget is, they are living on OUR lake,AND we are boating on THEIRS. The lake is public. That being said, alot of people could stand to be more respectful. . .regardless of where they own property.

Thanks Shaker. Its people like you that make Lake Martin wonderful. You will probably never see my blue and white Caravelle, as we are typically beached somewhere enjoying a swim--without causing wakes, noise, or wrecklessness. However, if you should see me (or someone you suspect might be me) give a big wave. I will be sure to wave back.

everyone here knows siggy is about the smartest and most rational youngun' on the lake; Value his worldly opinions....... Us old farts can only wish we possessed so much insight. Gee, if I'd only spent more time screwing around when I was younger, I wouldn't have this big a$$ silver spoon sucking my brain out.....right?

.......actually siggy, I think I know what you meant, but you have a knack for being stereotypical and somewhat hot-headed in your arguments. If you learn to harness such passion, maybe someday you can join us in being frivolous land merchants.

actually, i dont care to harness those arguements. Aside from the fact that similar stereotypical language is used to describe us beer guzzling, karaoke singing, wreckless, wake producing, irresponsible weekenders, i plan on becoming an attorney--where such arguements are welcomed.

As i said, I admit that I was generalizing and stereotyping. However, weekenders experience the same thing. My parents have worked hard their entire lives. They have a nice house, nice cars, and have put 3 kids through college. They do not have the money to buy a lake house, but i am sure it is because they sat around, wasted time, or didnt sacrifice enough.

Full-time property owners are rich and suck. Week-enders and visitors suck. However, weekend, property-owning visitors rule. That is all.

Sig, be careful when you catch that awful disease "envy-itis". When my wife and I look back on our years during professional education, we often remark that they were the best years of our lives..... poor, tired, babies in diapers, living barely from paycheck to paycheck, holding three jobs, moonlighting, I could go on. But the one thing we never called ourselves was a "have not". My advice is to take notice of your lot in life as it currently stands, being grateful for your health, family, and the opportunity to enjoy this little slice of heaven whenever you can.

Thanks, but dont misunderstand me calling myself a have not. I was simply referring to the material things. I have a very blessed, enjoyable life with far more material things than most at my age. I am very fortunate to be in my position, but i still understand that I am not material wealthy by any means. Thats all i was referring to.

You make my point. From my perspective, compared to my years in training, you are currently a "have" when measured materialistically. When you come to that realization, you may then be hesitant to characterize the "have"s as thinking their defecant is non-odorous, so to speak....

Now we get back to the odor issue. In my youth the have's had lime in the outhouse, and the have-not's just cracked the door.

I do see your point. However, I never expect any of my material possessions to improve my societal position. People are people and by definition are part of the public. Therefore, when it comes to a public lake, i dont care what any of us have or have not, we are not above (nor below) anyone else. Having a modern ski boat doesnt make me any better than someone with a john boat, just as being a weekender does not put me beneath those that inhabit the "Scrushy Slough".

The lime was supposed to keep away the flies also was it not? Did you have a single, double or multiple holer? O O ; )

You are correct Doc. Those horse flies could cause you to worry about more than the odor. Naturally the odor drew the flies. A two holer but without a separation in between. I guess it would of been considered middle class. ???

Also, all the Nam Vets remember the facilities. My platoon had a one holer that was collasible since we changed field locations at least once a week. That helped eliminate the need for lime. The Platoon Sgt.'s name was Wiley, and we called it Wiley's mobile home.

My father bought a small lot here on the lake when I was 16 years old. Since I am will be 60 in May, I think I am quallified to comment on this subject. My husband kiddingly says one of the reasons he married me was because it meant he could come to the lake. It worked, we've been married 41 years. We have been weekenders and after his military career was over, we stayed in Montgomery. 5 years ago, we built our dream lakehouse. I believe everyone who comes to the lake or lives here are the luckiest people in the world. If you are courteous on the water, the land, to your neighbors, on the roads and in the businesses, I welcome everyone to this wonderful place. I really regret to see comments from anyone that would make someone think that the "full-timers" don't seem to be welcoming to our visitors or our neighbors.

Pretty cool that your family has had the same spot on the lake for that many years. However, that alone does not qualify you to comment on this subject. What qualifies you, or anyone else in the world, to comment on this subject is access to an internet connection. An internet connection gives anybody and everybody the right to voice their opinion on the Lake Martin Forum.
