Gary....first of all, thanks to you and your colleagues for your hard work...I know ya'll don't get the appreciation you really deserve. I think that just being present and visible helps to keep some of the knuckle-heads from being complete idiots on the water.
I had a couple of questions for you: I generally have my wife in the boat as the "observer" when I tow the kids on the tubes or skis. However, there are times when the kids want to go and she's not available. Am I correct in my reading of the law that I can legally tow skiers/tubers WITHOUT an observer in my boat as long as I have a mirror of 78 sq.in. Similarly, my SeaDoos have the usual two rear view mirrors; is that also acceptable without an observer???
My second question relates to proof of licensure. Yes, I have a valid boater's license, and in a typical lake day, I am operating several different craft (boat & PWCs). Is it acceptable to you to keep a photocopy of my licence on each craft instead of the "real thing"??? This may sound petty, but being in and out of the water, it would be nice to know that I didn't have to keep my un-waterproof wallet on my person at all times. I try my best to follow the rules, and would like to know your take on this.

Great questions... we've wondered the same thing regarding the licenses. More than once I've gotten back to Birmingham and realized the DL is still in the boat or Sea Doo. (ooops) Luckily I haven't been stopped and had to explain this to a Police Officer (whom I bet wouldn't be very sympathetic)... Thus, I too have wondered if a laminated photo copy would do?????
One more thing... please refresh my memory on the policy for out of state visitors being able to operate water craft if they do not have an AL vessel license (all well above legal age). Family is coming in from CA and I just couldn't remember the rules on this and need to know before one asks to drive the SEA Doo!

Don't take your whole wallet with you, put your license in a zip lock snack size bag, and it will keep it dry, and if you happen to drop it in the water, it will float. If not in a zip lock, it sinks, and very quickly..

Boats can tow skiers, etc. without an observer IF there is a mirror at least 78 sq. in. to allow the operator to see behind.....PWC are only required to have 10 sq. in. mirrors on each side....there is no observer requirement for PWCs.
You are required to have your boat license with you when operating a boat. There are retail products available to carry your license or you could do as another poster suggested, use a ziploc bag.
Out of state residents have to abide by what their state requires (i.e. GA boater safety for teens) and they need to have proof of residence. In other words they need to carry their ID as well. They are required to be licensed if operating a boat more than 45 days in AL.

if you could make a certified copy of the license or if you could just get multiple duplicates.There must be some way of solving this. I am just like the first poster - I foget it and find myself without a license. How or who should we address this to in the powers that decide? Got any ideas?

I mentioned this in the above post (Life Vests), but you could do like a buddy of mine did. He went to the drivers license division and told them he lost his license. They charged him 15 or 20 bucks and made him a new one. He put the old one (still valid) on his boat and keeps the new one in his wallet. This sounds expensive until you consider that if you did it with a newly renewed license, you wouldnt have to do this again for 4 years.

DMV gave me a duplicate license when I passed the boating test way back when, tried to give them my old license and they stated just keep it.
This year when I renewed the lady told me to come back in about three weeks and they would give me a duplicate license again this year to keep in the boat, believe the cost is like $10.00.
Do not know if all state licensing offices will do this or not, but worth a try.
Our office is in North Shelby County, AL.

When my husband and I went to the Dadeville courthouse to register to vote and get DL with new address, we were told that you are allowed to have a duplicate DL if you have your boat operator designation. The lady said this is the only legal reason that Alabama drivers can have a legal duplicate DL. It sure is nice to have two.
