Has anyone heard that the lake levels may be dropping early than normal this year? I've heard that Alabama Power may be dropping the level earlier due to work that will be required on the dam, as a result of the recent heavy rains. I've heard that the lock system was damaged during recent storms.

The lake level should drop no sooner than normal this year, although that will depend a lot on rainfall.

However, the lake level will be significantly lower this winter, probably near the 460' mark, though we won't know exactly where to stop until the level has dropped enough for us to get a more accurate assessment of the situation.

Because of the lower level, and the time it will take us to make the needed repairs, it is unlikely that the lake level will get above 480 until the summer of 2007; we should be able to get back to full pool sometime that summer. Or, at the very latest, by the beginning of summer 2008.

Thanks for your patience.

Ok! A good joke. Now give us the real truth about the lake level.

It's back to lovely Lake Lanier for me where I may be boating in feces, at least it will be full pool feces.

Here we go, again. Every year somebody or somebodies create rumors or repeat last year's rumors about lake levels. Many more are gullible enough to spread the rumors. There are some who will see the alias APCO Dan and assume this person is an Alabama Power Company employee. I know that Lakeman isn't buying any of it.

When it comes to lake levels believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see.

I believe that if the drop was to be extreme we would get official notices from APCO and not APCO Dan. The lowest I have seen the lake in recent years was 477-78. Some have told of it being dropped 20-30' some years back. If they do drop it that far Russell will probably build seawalls and back-fill to have more lots to sell. Peace.

They ARE making repairs to Thurlow Dam (the one below Martin and ahead of Yates in Tallassee) right now. As a result, the 'middle pond' has been lowered by about 5-6' until the repairs are complete. This has nothing to do with Martin Dam, except that they are not likely to release any more water than can be handled at Thurlow during the repair period..

As a marina operator, I receive all of the FERC notices. (FERC is the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that has all gov't authority over the lake!) Alabama Power has reached an agreement with FERC to change the operating guideline to keep Lake Martin at full pool a month longer in the Summer and to begin the fill process a month earlier in the spring, starting in 2006. Currently under discussion with FERC is the idea of only taking the Lake down to 485' in the winter instead of 480', but that has not been decided. There is some opposition to this idea.

IMHO, APCO Dan is an idiot.

Lanier is just the water in the toilet tank used to flush Atlanta. I feel sorry for West Point.

How appropriate that West Point Lake is mostly known for its' " Crappie".

This is good news! But I can't find more details from my search of the APCo site... while there is plenty of info about relicensing of dams on the Coosa right now... there is nothing (yet) about the FERC decision pertaining to Martin Dam. Could you provide an internet address I might get more info from?

Even "I" didn't believe APCO Dan!!!

Since AnchorbayDon is a Lake Martin business man who probably has SOME connection with what DOES go on with the water,... I'm trusting his word. Thanks AnchorbayDon for the info!

If the lake level WERE to be dropped so low that it would take 2-3 years to refill (which won't happen except during a severe drought or if Atlanta drains the Tallapoosa to water its yards), it would be too low for almost everyone to use in the summer. The economic impact would be devestating. That is reason in itself not to lower the lake down to 460. Besides, one good tropical storm or a spring with heavy rains would throw those predictions off pretty quickly. I can't remember what the lowest level I have ever seen is, but I think it was the low 470's. The lake still filled up just fine the next summer. One other thing to bring up. Having the lake around 480 in the summertime would be very dangerous. There are a lot of people on the lake now that do not know about the rocks, sunken islands, etc that are just a few feet under the surface when the lake is full. In the late '80s, there was a drought year when the lake was down 5 feet or more most of the summer. I remember seeing boats hitting rocks and trenching long shallow points with their lower units. Summer levels down 10 feet or more would be a hazard to newbies and oldtimers alike.

I did not get this from the internet, but from an official mailing of the FERC. Due to the importance of the lake levels, etc on my business, I have requested to be copied on all permit requests, agreements, etc, that have to do with Lake Martin. It means that I get overwhelmed at times with useless data, but once in a while there's something of value.

I suppose you could surf through FERC's official site www.FERC.gov and drill down into the archives and get it that way.
