Ok let's try a different approach to the lake issue. What do you think could be done and by whom to make Lake Martin better?

1) The Power Co should locate and raise all power lines that hang low enough to snag sailboats.
2) Noise ordinances should be enforced at the Marina's before the superloud ocean racers are permitted to launch. Systems that even allow the "switching off" of muffled exhaust should be prohibited by law.
3) The size of vessels should be limited by law on inland lakes.
4) More Marine Police presence.
5) Developers should be putting in sewage systems, and new single home construction should be installing the best septic systems possible.

1, Restrict boat speed limits to 60 MPH.

2. Enforce NO WAKE (idle speed) laws within 200 feet of any dock.

Very good respones!

I have a question for Copperline: where are the lines low enough to snag sailboats? This is scary.

Questions for anyone: there was a boat in our quiet little slough a few weeks back that was so loud it shook our cabin. And it was simply idling thru a no-wake area! I have never seen (or heard!!) anything like it. It was not a big boat but had great big chrome pipes curling out the back.

Support LAKEWATCH!! By the way, whatever happened to the effort to retrieve all the heartpine from the bottom of the lake? I will attempt to post a link for those not familiar with this attack on our lake.

1) Remove the noise restrictions currently in place.
2) Never limit the vessel size. The Big guys pay big taxes (then you get more marine police like we need)
3) Never put a speed limit on the lake.
4) Everyone, regaurdless of age (grandfather clause) take boating operations and safety courses.
5) Everyone be required to carry insurance on their boat.

Cat Boat, your # 4 is on the top of my list. If everyone was required to take a boating operation/ safety course it would eliminate a lot of problems on the lake. I'd also like to see more reflectors or lights on all the safety bouys out on the lake. Whoever places them there needs more support or donations to be able to do so.

There is plenty of money still in the account. As of the Summer of 2002 they had more than $70,000 in operating funds. Most of it gets used for new hazard buoys at about $150 each. Each year many have to be replaced. That, in itself, is costly and takes a lot of volunteer hours.

The solar lights cost nearly that same amount (no kidding). Spending big bucks to put solar lights on the 300 or more buoys already on the lake would be an utter waste of money and volunteer time. Especially given the fact that there is a very small number of boaters out and about after dark. Most of those who are out after dark already know where the buoys, and unmarked shallows, are.

Hate to rain on your parade, friend, but those are the facts.

We are all sewards of Our Lake! However, who really does have the control of the lake? Is it APC, Russell Lands or the Marine Police or???? We all need the answer to that one.

Copperline and OSms, Ditto to all you say!

CatBoat - Total agreement with your #4 & #5. However, there need to be a requirement you MUST attend a class and hear the horror stories and see the movies. Not take a test online....Unfortunately, the Big Guys will NEVER pay enough to re-pay the damage they do to the lake and our environment. The Big Guys need to be where their boats where designed to be...ON THE GULF COAST....where they can actually go somewhere and at the speeds they want to go.

Keep it up, this is really good.

is the real sleeper. The soil around LM doesn't seem to be the best for perkolation, there are no zoning regulations, there were no health inspections for the systems etc. Now some systems are getting to be 20 years old and guess where the effluent is finding its way to???

One of the biggest challenges I think is getting the local governments to realize that things have changed and put in the regulations necessary to protect the lake.

And while I'm at it who looks after all the silt and erosion after timberland (Al Power's subs) is cleaned out? Is the silt finding its way in to LM?

Now, what if i said bass boats belong in the farm pond, pontoons belong on the creek and river, and leave the lake for the power boats because everyone else gets in the way? It always comes back to the same old thing with you guys. Roswellric, i think you know what i am trying to say, help me out, you seem good with words of wisdom.

We just finished a house on the lake in Elmore County. I can tell you, they are very particular and I have a twin 1000 gallon tanks with a pump to pump the effluent uphill to the field lines. It has an electric alarm to let us know if there is a failure.

Years ago people used a 55 gallon drum for their tank - I hate to think about it.

I have been rasing cane about out dated septic systems on this board for years,to no avil. There is one place that I know is in total violation, but there are many others. The EPA needs to get off their rear ends and do their job, PERIOD.

Who is in charge of the lake? Alabama Power Company has the license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to manage the lake levels and to produce hydropower. APCO also owns all of the lake bottom to the 490' full pool level. Residents of Alabama own the water in the lake. We all share responsibility for the quality of the water. The Marine Police have the responsibility to enforce the laws that the legislature makes. Limiting the size of the vessels, the noise, and the speeds are among the responsibilities of the legislature.

I think beautiful fast boats are really cool (believe it or not) and they can be used on this very large lake but with some common sense self control that considers fellow boaters and residents on the lake.

1. The noise is really a problem. Especially in the narrow parts of the lake. This can be handled like CAT did with complying with the muffler regs. That's reasonable.

2. The speed can be a problem (just like bass boats that do 70+MPH). That's the responsiblilty of the operator. These boats are really designed for running over to the Bahamas for fun, sun & fish. So common sense and a little restraint will go a long way.

3. Smart guys that operate these boats are careful about safety. They know how quickly bad things can happen at high speeds.
We can co-exist if we all do our part in self policing too. I've seen plenty of idiots in runabouts endangering lives. The MP's can't make a perfect world. Maybe a "Powerboat Club" could promote safety and good relations.

The conversation is starting to get productive :-)

WOW... ROSWELLRIC, I knew you could straighten this go fast loud thing out. (you have a good memory to with the muffler thing, and i take the mufflers off when we go to the coast.). I can't go to the coast every weekend to enjoy my boat. But, on many occasions, I play on Lake Martin with the family in a boat that is really great on the lake. It rides good in the rough water, and we all have a good time. If i leave the rock and if the water is open and uncrowded between the power lines and sinclairs, I let it eat and really fly. But not even close to any cruisers or pontoons. That is what we like. I practice good safety, like shoefly, scarab man, fountain rider and more on this forum, and common sense and safety are a first. Thanks for not bashing us. Yu' da man

If part of the difficulty we have solving these problems comes from the fact that the lake stretches between 3 counties, "owned" by 2 large corporations, and subject to regulations posted by uncounted agencies of the state and federal governments.... Would it ever be possible to organize the entire Lake as a entity like a city or municipality , somehow forming a single regional authority that could oversee zoning, development and other community issues? Has that ever been done before?

On the flip side, we'd be the largest city in the country!

All Great comments and ideas. Although I am a newbie I do live on the lake full time. I grew up in the Seattle area on a beatiful lake that I watched the county and 3 cities that bordered it totally ruin. Phospherour loading was the main issue, mostly from Chem-Lawn and other services that eventually choked the life out of the lake. Now, few fish and mostly algae are all that is left. It puts our quit an odor during many summer days and all it would have taken was some responsible planning.

I certainly will help with Lake Watch and with clean-ups or whatever else I can to to prevent having to watch a second lake slowly die.

Wow Lakeman. What a prophetic question. The answer is simple if we would rather the country's "Lockwoods" not to end up here. The only way to protect the lake is to develop NO more of the shoreline that has already been decimated. Stop all future development. Everyone who condones the huge, fast boats and the continued development of the shoreline is simply continuing the lifespan of LM on borrowed time. But, in all reality and truth, LM will one day.....sooner than we all project....be yet another overcrowded, unappreciated water hole and nothing any of us can do about it. If you've been here since the 60's you already know what I mean.

Maybe the price of gas will go so high that it will make LM a ghost lake. We can only hope.

It was John Kennedy who said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." But Reagan was an actor, which means he was used to taking things that other people had written and passing them off as his own words, so maybe he did the same thing with JFK's speech.
