I don't know who it was but some of you called the Braves just right. I thought they would finish 3rd but here they are ...in August, 5 games in first place! I though Smoltz would cave. Glad I didn't bet money on it...

Does anyone ever consider the fact that it is possible that the Braves just get out talented in the playoffs? Everyone always wants to call it a choke or blame Bobby Cox. The fact is, Cox, Mazzone, and Schurholtz are the reason they get to the playoffs every year. The problem is, once you get to the playoffs, you run into two types of teams that are poised to beat you. The first type is the team on a mission. . .these are the late season clinchers. . .like the Cubs and Astros that had to fight hard all the way through the season and are riding a wave of momentum that helps to carry them through the division round. The second type of team is the Rent a Team (Mets and Marlins are some recent examples) or Buy a Team (Yankees every year). The Rent a Teams have no desire to build powerful organizations. They are basically saying up front, "We will trade 8 or 10 years of mediocre-poor baseball to pay for a team full of 1 year contracted superstars that can take us all the way". These teams usually have a huge sell off in the off season. The Buy a Team NY Yankees simply take advantage of a way to soft salary cap. Stienbrenner is willing to pay hundreds of millions in luxury tax to put a superstar at every position. . .and they still may not make the playoffs this year. Do away with luxury tax provisions and make the salary cap firm and then see how powerful the Yanks are. The Braves on the other hand, have a payroll that is less than many of the teams that they are leading and at one time this season fielded a starting roster that was entirely from their own farm system.
The bottom line is that I would much rather go to the playoffs EVERY year AND win a championship every 10-15 years, than go to the playoffs once every 7 or 8 years and go all the way then. A solid program is much better to have than a once a decade contender.

Ever consider that the manager actually plays a more prominent role in a playoff series? That would include motivating your team and gaining momentum,as well as developing and implementing a strategy to win. There are 3 types of managers too. Those who make things happen, those who let things happen and those who say 'what happened?'
I would agree the Braves get 'out -talented' every year in the playoffs. The only constant over the last 13 years is the talent that sits in the dugout.

You know for a young guy you are pretty dang smart! I agree with most all of what you say. My biggest complaint against Bobby is that he just can't or won't be more active in the playoffs in manufacturing runs. He is not aggressive and doesn't play by the book offensively in the playoffs for some reason...otherwise he is a great day-to-day manager.

Thanks for the compliment and I agree with your analysis. I am a big fan of A-B-C baseball (gettem on, move em over, gettem in). One big problem the Braves have had in the playoffs is the A (gettem on) portion of the equation. A double is just a double if noone is on base. Last post season Andruw hit .500 and only had a hadful of RBI's. If you have a player that gets a hit half the time he gets up, you should score plenty of runs. I guess what I am saying is that Cox ends up in a lose-lose situation. When every player goes up there swinging, he gets criticized for not manufacturing runs. However, when no one gets on base, its hard to bunt a nonexistant runner over to second.

I think it still comes down to the fact that programs with great coaching and managing will remain consistant contenders and will be in the playoffs regularly. Once you get there, you have to have talent and luck. Teams that win 7 game series had luck on their side. In 91, if Kirby Pucket swings 1/16 of an inch lower, the Braves win the series. If the umpire rules that Hrbek pulled Gant off the bag. . .the braves win the series. Sometimes things dont go your way no matter how talented a teams players, managers, and coaches are. I think that one of the biggest problems the Braves are having is that they are being compared to the Paid-for-Teams that are their exact opposites. The rent a series marlins and the luxury tax yankees dont have a system that produces winners so they buy them. There is no comparison. . .I am a BASEBALL fan and therefore love watching the best franchise in baseball. . .THE ATLANTA BRAVES.
