At what point in the year does the Lake become unnavigable (from a practical standpoint) due to water depth? When does it reach the point that you cannot launch a boat and or reach the pier at your cabin to tie up?

I grew up on Lake Martin but we moved away when I was an early teen and I didn't pay much attention to that stuff - kind of distracted you know.

That is a wide open question without a true correct answer; it depends where you are and what you want to do. The lake is plenty deep and is always navigable, but there are many places in coves and creeks that require care when the lake is down. Some docks go dry, and others have 5-10 feet of water in the worst of times. If you are unfamiliar, I suggest using caution and a depth finder from this point on.

I have a pontoon boat and am looking to just put in and tie up to a dock while I am there .

I have some good friends who have never seen Lake Martin and I just wanted to spend a quiet weekend with them and show them "the secret".

If you put in at the public ramp by the Kowaliga bridge, the water is good all year. There are some shallow areas far from shore, but if your careful you should be fine. Use your depth finder and watch for changes in water color.

I bought a map several years that had the bottom contours on it. I think they still may be available at Wal Mart or the marinas. While not detailed enough to show every hazard, it may give you a clue as to where some potential problems are. Otherwise, I would stick to the middle of the lake, since most (but not all)of the hazardous areas at lower levels will be closer to shore. Also, I would stay out of some of the shallower main creeks, as these tend to be silted up at the winter pool level for some distance into the lake.
