Sorry Cat Boat, It is an acronym that stands for Forward Looking Infra-Red. Military technology that has been out for years now. I believe you can actually get it as an option on some Cadillacs and maybe some other premium vehicles. You really have to see it to appreciate how great it is. Needless to say, Cobalt would of seen that big rock with plenty of time to spare. Attached is a short movie that might give you a feel for it.

Didn't think about it much when reading the "accident" post, but I use my gps nav system when cruising the lake at night. It makes it easy to find shorelines and waypoints, but does nothing to warn you of objects or other boats in your path.

I think you can. As I stated before, I believe you can get it as an option on Cadillacs. I know for sure that you can not take them out of the country without and export license from the Commerce Department. I also know that Dept. of Defense rarely chops or concurs on such a license for a private citizen. It is too risky and they loose total cotrol of what happens to the item. That along with Gen III Night Vision devices are our big advantage of winning the night fight.

Yall play nice... Shoefly, you have some cat in you, i have never seen you have a problem seeing in the dark. Now that i think about it. Male prostitutes see pretty well in the dark. I wonder if that is why you get around so well at night.????? (funny)! And fountain rider, I know you can't see in the dark, the last time you went out on the lake at night, you could not see your gas gauge, and we had to come and get you. REMEMBER?

These ideas about night-riding technology are pretty interesting ideas, and maybe in the future some of them will become affordable. But I have to worry about whether there is just a fundamental problem with driving at night on a lake at a speedy clip. It's open water, there will always be risks from floating & submerged objects, unlit boats, or boats driven by unwise 'captains'. To me, safety is directly related to speed and visiability conditions.... high tech devices might promise to increase safety, but slowing down is always going to decrease risks out there (and it's cheap!)

Copperline, I agree with you 100%. All my friends I have ridden with, shoefly, fountainrider, and many others will hardly have a conversation with passengers while underway after dark. They are too busy watching for others. (maybe that is why fountainrider didnt watch his gas gauge) Things can happen very fast. I've said this before, "we navigate the waters at night with 60+ year old technology, and .15 cent light bulbs", and it is ashamed. Not too long ago a boat would only go so fast comfortably, but now, boat performance is quite different, and we become more comfortable with everything.

I also agree with you copperline. I think one of the great things about the FLIR System around the Lake would actually be in cars and trucks. I have actually been in a HUMVEE with the system and it shows stuff off the sides of the roads that headlights do not reveal. I know on my sector of the Lake I come across ten times more deer than other vehicles at night. The system would allow you to see deer off to the sides of the road that might be entering the roadway. I think the system might also help those that suffer from night blindness. In another few years maybe it will be affordable enough for all of us to have in our vehicles. Not sure, but it may also help out in fog.
Lakefun asked about hand held versions. The best thing for his application might be Gen II or maybe even some of the early Gen III Night Vision stuff that is reasonably affordable. Gen I was the late Nam era followed by Gen Ii and now the really great stuff in Gen III with different versions of the Gen III. I believe WalMart may even carry some of the Night Vision devices.
The technology between Night Vision and FLIR are two different concepts. I believe I am correct in stating that the Night Vision is based on illumination from moon or star lighting. The FLIR is based on heat energy that is given off in a object like animals/running engines or absorbed and stored in an object like rocks and metal machinery. Both of the technologies are the reason our soldiers "Own the NIght".
