on a hot issue.

There has been much said about the recent boating accident, but it all boils down to the fact that someone was driving way too fast for the given conditions…..IT WAS DARK!

Don’t get me wrong, because I like speed and power as much as anyone. That being said, I often (actually very often) see boats running dangerously fast at night. It’s a wonder we don’t have more accidents with the lack of common sense and foolishness that is often exhibited.

People whine and cry about noise and wakes, but driving fast when you can’t see is downright dangerous business! As the lake becomes more populated, I expect we will have more accidents and injuries….. unless something is done about a nighttime speed limit, and people start exercising caution.

What is amazing is the firework display on the night of the 4th. After it is over that is a major disaster waiting to happen. All the boat leaving at the same time it is worse than the gulf. All the Sr. citizens in the pontoon boats they easily get swamped with the waves. Alway overloaded etc.

Also Jim, it sounded like you were getting a lot of help with the flushing after the reaming.

I dont think I want any of your narrow minded schooling. Not only was Cobalt accused of being a drunken idiot, now hes driving to fast and needs a speed limit slapped on him to make Lake Martin a safer place.Did you not reed what Cobalt said really happen. He was running around 35mph,is that unreasonable. If so I might as well park my boat after dark bacause my boat will barely stay on plane around that speed.Keep your schooling to your self if your going get on this band wagon against Cobalt,I dont even know him but I bet he wished he never met a 3rd the people on this forum..

run L Lanier at 30mph but the situation is much tougher at Martin. Lanier has plenty of markers that give you better information and there is lots of ambient lighting from the population that is absent at Martin. I have yet to run Martin at night because of this. Maybe I'll try putting around in my pontoon on a moonlit night first.

Oh yes the comment about the spotlight - that should be used to flash ahead intermittently to look for obstacles and idiots that are anchored without lights....

Peace

In the dark of night no Q-beam apparently unsure of the open path going
thru chimney rock area. 35 is hauling ssa on the water. Hey the guy that wrecked is probably a nice successful individual but we all make mistakes. Again as stated before I'm just glad he was not seriously hurt.

It's interesting to see some of the opinions in this thread about running at night, especially at speed. I choose not to run at night on the Lake because I do not trust the people who do think they can see at night--they cannot see at night and if they think they can then they make up the cateogory called idiots. Who can see a log in the water at night?

If you run at speed at night and trust others to see you and stay out of your way then that makes you a super idiot. Hope I didn't hit a nerve with anyone!!

As fast as you are traveling, it will probably just get reamed like Jim's. Although, your boat may change colors.

A speed limit is the last thing we need. Personal responsibility is all that is needed.Asking for a speed limit is like asking for a tax once it's made law it is out your control.

Yes, 35 mph is too fast on an admittedly DARK, DARK night. I am amazed that noone has commented about the fact that the KILLSWITCH was not attached to driver at time of accident. If there is ever a time to use it (as prescribed by law), certainly hauling a$$ on a DARK, DARK night would be one. Having said that, I wish to say that I am happy that Cobalt is apparently o.k. and I am sure that he will think things differently next time but hope that this thread can perhaps save someone else from
the tragic eventuality that he experienced that night.

Good point bigfoot, I never use my kill switch, just required to have one, kinda like seat belts in Ga. pain in the a`ss not required in pu`s.

With all due respect BIGFOOT, A kill switch is not required by law on boats over 21 ft. That may have changed lately, but i dont think so. Should we wear them anyway, yea! Probably should wear lifejackets also i guess. My .02 worth.

>>>Alabama law requires that vessels less than 24 feet in length, with an open cockpit and powered by more than 50 horsepower, be equipped with an ignition safety switch. The lanyard of the switch must be attached to the person, clothing or PFD of the operator<<<

The above is apparently the current law in Alabama for killswitches...if you are in a boat where you could be possibly thrown out, not a bad idea
to hook up to your killswitch at night...thanks

Maybe if the killswitch was attached to a 1/2" line noose around the driver's neck and a cleat, the driver wouldn't be tempted to let his boat outrun his eyeballs at night.

Hey, the idea solution to this whole deal is put up night lights around the chimney rock area.

Not meaning to criticize your suggestion, but I believe there are a few of us who would like to see the Lake stay as natural as possible and not look like a Christmas Tree or air strip.

There could be middle ground (water) with a centrally located single small red danger light . Not sure you can guard aginst every possibility, and as others have wisely stated "caution and good judgement are the responsbility of the operator".

A boat that will not plane until it reaches 35MPH, mentioned by another poster, may not be the right boat for dark night time operations. Running at night might require a second boat in the stable. One can have the thoroughbred for racing and the mule for plowing.

Maybe we just need a lake taxi. What about a few college ladys needing a 3rd shift job around here.Proper clothing would be required,im a two piece bikini fan myself.Just throwing a few ideas out there.

Hooter girls are a good idea, ive got a buddy that works for Miller light that employs a few nice young ladys as Miller light girls to do promotions.Im sure they might help if the Hooter girls was busy..

say anything bad about Cobalt. My point was one of safety and it is valid.

You are obviously the one with a narrow mind.

I read Cobalts post. I think he is aware that he made a mistake and was going too fast for the conditions. Many others do the same on a regular basis, but most are just luckier than Cobalt was.
