I need to know if there is another TV service available to give Charter some competption. I am being billed for the Auburn-Ball State game and several movies that I could not tune in. I called the 800 number to complain and was told to call the local office, but they could not give me the phone number. She said the next time I was over to drop in. Now I get a cancellation notice. My feeling is to tell them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine. Is Direct TV or Dish any better? I have had service people come out and assure me I can get service but it just won't work.

I have Direct TV at home & cable at the Lake... Direct TV is OK but very sensitive to summer storms when the signal can't penetrate those high-voltage clouds. So getting up-to-date weather info can be difficult when you need it most. Other than that, I haven't had any problems with the service. Movie selection matches recent releases at the Video store, for about a $1 less. I doubt you could have gotten the AU/Ball State game on their service though. Finally, DirectTV's internet service is way too expensive to replace Charter's cable internet service and you'll have to pay extra for local channels. Basic DirectTV service is around $50-55 per month. Hope all that's helpful......

I looked at both the "Dish Network" & "DirecTV" systems. The Dish Network said they could provide the digital, High Definition and local channels. They came to the house with a 3 foot antenna that was to heavy to put on a house and said they needed a clear area without any trees. Need-less to say they gave up and went away.

DirecTV came with an oval antenna with three heads that is about 20 inches across and they mounted it on the roof line. Looking at where it is pointed I would say that it looks through the trees. I get excellent pictures and only have a problem during an electrical storm. I have the basic package, High Definition package and local channels out of New York and Los Angeles for $60 per month. If we want Montgomery local news we use an air antenna and also get good pictures.

Your dish probably uses an offset feed where the signal comes in from a much higher angle than the direction the dish is "looking". The signal bounces off the top of dish and reflected to the feedhorn/lnb down low....doubt that you would be able to get a usable signal through the
trees. I have Charter cable and pipeline and have been very satisfied with them. I also have a 10' dish with C and Ku feeds using a 4DTV receiver capable processing analog and digital. I also use an mpeg
digital receiver with the big dish. I don't miss much...WAR EAGLE!

Thanks for the replys. I guess I'll take a day off from work and go to Alex City. I may go over the night before, get some Oskars catfish fingers, and enjoy my trip.

My Charter bill went up $20+ this month... now $114 with internet and movie package..... I got fed up and took some time to drive to Alex City and turn the darn box in and was informed that they could give me the same deal for $89 a month. They just weren't going to tell me unless I walked in there! What a scam. Also- If you cancel, you must hand delliver your box and you will be billed everyday until you do. I also thought it hilarious that my latest bill had a couple of rebates/refunds on it..... .57 cents and .42 cents! WOW.... thanks. I wonder how many people just let the increase roll by and continue to pay their bill... this is what Charter hopes for so that the CEO can make his Lamborghini payment.

There is NO phone number available to contact Alex City Cust Service direct....

They say analog TV will be gone in a year or two as well.... this stuff needs to be regulated! They got us right where they want us.

It did not seem to faze the woman in Ohio(?) that she did not have a phone number to reach her Alex City office. I tried to explain to her that you just can't call them and explain the problem. They know what the problem is and make no effort to solve it. I think they like not having any contact with their customer base other than collecting the payments. I have had the problem with pay per view ball games for two years now. The main reason I have a TV at the lake is for football games and Braves baseball. I hate to cut my nose off to spite my face, but I hate for somebody to get over on me because I have no recourse, I may vert well pay them a visit with the box in hand. I dang well won't pay for something I did not get.

That's serevice desk technology. They really don't care or can do anything about it. I had a banking problem recently, couldn't talk to anyone in the branch, got a help desk that was in another city. Then I was assigned to a personal banker in another state. Wow, some personal relationship huh... I asked if the guy was going to fly down and take me to lunch so we could have a "relationship".

Some technology applications stink.....

I hate the cable company too. I could never get a good HD signal, just wasn't worth the $$, so I turned in my DVR and HD boxes. Now I am wondering if I get Direct TV at my home, and get another receiver and dish for the Lake house, can I get a signal using the same account? Would never be using both at once because we are either here or there. I see lots of RVs with a sat dish so I wonder? You can pick up a dish on E-bay real cheap. Anyone out there do that?

there is a way you can get an extra dish for about $10/mo as an RV dish if you have the dish at home. There was a post on this not too long ago and I know someone that is doing it too...

If your dish at the lake is also correctly positioned to the DirecTV satellite, you could take your receiver with you when you go from one place to another...might be too much a hassle unless you enjoy hooking up the connections in the back. A better approach might be to get a "second bedroom" receiver (depending upon how much extra they tack on) and let your "second bedroom" be the lake house.

The number for Charter in Alex City is 256-234-7272. I called the other day because our basic cable/internet went up about $20.00 a month. They were very helpful. She switched us to a digital cable package that ended up coasting us about $2.00 a month more than we had been paying before the $20.00 increase. We have a lot more channels than we had with our old package for only $2.00 a month. .

We are on the AC side of the lake and have a local cable company, ComCast. We have had great cable service, as well as good customer service-- they were able to actually "schedule" the installation around my schedule, not around theirs. They are in the process of installing high-speed internet service. My neighbor recommended this company when Charter told us they don't have service to the Winderemere West area and the dish folks told us we'd have to cut down some trees to get a good signal. I wish we could get Com Cast in B'ham, cause they're cheaper and easier to deal with!

Glad to hear t hat the cable modem internet will soon be there with Comcast since my place is on the AC side. Hope their prices are a little better there since in Virginia the basic cable and internet is $97.00 a month.

Well RR & JIM, Worked in VA & want a retirement in AL. I retired 3 years ago. My spouse still has another 4 years until retirement. I thought about and looked for a place on the Lake for several years and bought back in the Summer of 2001. Great lot with an old Russell Cabin. The cabin was hit by a tree last year during Ivan. I am currently working with an Architect & a builder for a new place this Spring. The initial plan was to always rebuild anyway.

Alabama is home for me and there are a lot of advantages and benefits to retiring in Alabama. They include close by family, better quality of life, no State Income Tax and the list goes on. One of my Brothers has a place on the Lake. We are on the same side of Lake but 11 miles apart via land travel.

We have had anywhere from two weeks to a month every year in the old cabin. The same will continue and maybe even more so until the spouse's retirement. It is a tremendous sanity check for the insanity of living in Northern VA (D.C. Metro area).

Hope that answers both of your question, and neither of you find fault with my reasoning and self justification. One day, I look forward to having both of you and others on the Forum as neighbors.

The Great State of Alabama does not tax (Income Tax) the retirement pay of Federal Retirees. I assume that is true for Military Retirement pay, and I would bet it is true for State Civil Service Retirement checks. Big advantage over Florida since the property tax is much less in Alabama. It would help if sales tax were only more reasonable, but I guess you can't have everything.

I guess you got it d`icked if you had employment with the U.S. OF A .(notice I did not say work) Government . We who work every day and pay taxes do not reap those benefits of Government retirees, That is a travisity, what`s good for the Goose should be good for the gander. They should back up to the bank teller`s windowr when they put the tax payers money in their account.

Most pensions, regardless of the employer, are not taxed by the State of AL.

taxed. Others such as 401K plans, profit sharing plans, defined contribution plans, SEPs, SIMPLES, and Keogh plans are subject to the Ala income tax.
