Feb,

I am currently thinking about either renovating or rebuilding on my lake lot. I have a 30 year old home/cabin near Pleasure Point. You mentioned a archietect and builder. If you are happy with their services, would you mind sharing their names/numbers? Iam looking for similar services, since I live in Atlanta, i am not very well networked except for this forum.

Kind of premature at this time. I have just turned on the Architect and had initial discussions with the builder to lock-in a start date on his busy calendar. I should be able to give you a report on the Architect in a couple of months. You may want to acquire a book of plans entitled "Waterfront Homes" by Home Planners, LLC (ISBN 1-881955-64-8). I think they also have an internet site. I found it as the best publication for ideas. They had a basic plan with the look I liked, but I am making major modifications to the floor plan lay-out and room sizes. Therefore, I feel more comfortable with a local Architect that can properly handle the changes and knows the local codes, lay of the land & etc. You may just get lucky with this publication and find pretty close to exactly what you want and acquire the build to print plans from the publisher. That would save you a few bucks. Send me a personal email through the Forum, and I will send you a link to my inspiration from the book.

Every trip to the Lake, I make a point to take some time and go visit places under construction to get ideas & view the work of builders. I also pay close attention to the Cabin featured each Month in the "Lake Martin Living". In the Oct. issue I found several ideas that I am hoping to incorporate in my place. Bet you are doing the same and even have had more opportunities than myself.

When was the last time Lake Martin Living featured a "cabin" as one of thier Cabins of the Month? All I've seen are homes at the Ridge, which hardly qualify as cabins (no matter what the spin-meisters at Russell Lands want you to believe.)

Well longtimer, I may of used rather loose terminology (feature Cabin of the month). It is certainly not worth debating and was not the point I was attempting to make in response to the query from noagenda. The October issue did have a nice Cabin that seems to of been designed for the property owners desires by a local architect and was built by a builder of their choice.

The publication does provide articles and pictures of cabins/homes on Lake Martin. Some are not suitable for my lot, and some are not my preference. I am building a place of my choosing that may incorporate some of the small touches I have seen in recent articles among other resources

Possibly, I am missing your point on this matter, since I generally respect your post. Might be nice, with your knowledge and your long time experience on the Lake, to elaborate with some positive pointers in response to noagenda's post. I am sure he will appreciate the help.

By the way, I was personally scolded by several members of the Forum a couple of year ago. Their point was that every residential building on the Lake from a simple Russell Cabin to the most magnificient mansion is properly referred to as a "Cabin". Possibly, I am being corrected again or there is simply varying opinions. Therefore, one will always be in jeopardy for what they post on this Forum.

i will enjoy reading your positive pointers and advice to those of us who are building or planning to build on the Lake.

you don't think a littl' ole cabin like the "Camp" that's just 4-5000 ft is a house do you....? It's just a little old cabin at the lake.... :-)

Books with various plans are a good begining, but don't order your plan from the book itself. Take it to an archietect, show him the plan and make your changes. This is done everyday. I have found that no plan will ever be "exactly" what you're looking for, nor will the house you build. You will always find something "you wish you had done" or "something you should have done differantly" when building.
As far as books,....most are pulished in the Northern States, therefore they will have things drawn up on the plans that do not apply for this area.
If you have a general idea of what you "think" you might want to build,
squarefootage, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, 1 or 2 story, etc. then most any archietect can help you with the rest. Ask around the Atlanta area, surely there is someone closer to you that can draw up your plans.
You will make many trips back and forth before the final plans are drawn.
THEN find a good builder in the Lake Martin area who won't take you for a ride!
Good luck!
