Do you guys see any parallel in growth in Montgomery or Birmingham compared to what you know about Atlanta? What I mean is, Atlanta's history was to make it the mecca of the South....the Atlanta airport could have gone to Birmingham, but the founding fathers of Atlanta (Mayor William Hartsfield at the time and Ivan Allen) got other influential businessmen to make it happen in Atlanta...
........and happen it did.
Because of a major airport, more diverse - west coast, NE, international businesses came to Georgia. Do you agree that Atlanta has a more diverse population than a Montgomery or Birmingham? And if they do, then, do these transplant major money players feel differently than....do I dare say it? - Southerners - about THEIR lake?
Did I make myself clear to answer Ric's question? I see this lake and it's surrounding area of loblolly pines and trailers scattered here and there as a Southern thing. My transplant friends, when they have to drive by a trailer to get to a nice place comment about it...but it just seems so NORMALLY Southern to me. I have lived in the South all my life. Not that I wish sometimes I hadn't lived somewhere else...but as I am getting older, I am embracing the slow, sentimental, family oriented familiarity of home - my Southern home and all the good things about living Southern. Where as transplants tend to go with the flow.....because of their jobs....
This may be something no one can answer, as it may be just so individual. But, when I think of Atlanta....I see it as a mix of new and old and fast paced. Hard to keep the tradition in a progressively modern town.

I guess I was thinking more about Atlanta developers in the above statement than homeowners at the lake. And let me make this clear, I have both lived in Atlanta (mid-town near Piedmont hospital at Peachtree and Collier Rd.)AND in small sleepy Southern towns (Athens, Statesboro, Conyers, Newnan). So, I have experienced both sides of Southern living.
Is a homeowner a homeowner is a homeowner? I guess we all want what's best for our property...whatever that is.

Atlanta folks are great, Atlanta northeastern transplant YANKEES ain't necessarily so great (some are). Jaw, you seemed to have the right idea when you described what the massive influx of Atlantans did to Destin, and Lake Lanier, and Lake Occonee, Roswell, Marietta, etc. It's not the individuals that cause a problem, it's the masses and all that comes with them.
I can't for the life of me see the attraction to Destin at this point. Used to go all the time--gave it up five years ago. I can sit at a red light in traffic next to an outlet mall anywhere. What ever happened to going to the BEACH. Something got lost--and that is the concern on Lake Martin.

TATE- Many moons ago....1978 - 1983.
Atlanta was a great town then....to be a young adult during that time. It was terrific. I am lucky to still be alive, though. The things I did that I can't tell.....

Well you may have been there just as it closed I can't remember the exact date jawjagal but my grandfather owned a grocery store on the corner of Howell Mill and Collier. The name of it was Springer Brothers Market, he and his twin brother owned and ran the store for close to forty years. Just thought I would see if maybe you remembered it. Also my brother currently lives in a condo right near there on collier and loves it.

Oh, I hate asking this...I am really not a lush (well, remains to be seen) but was it next to a liquor store in that little strip ON Collier or was it facing Howell Mill on that side?
I think I remember it. Give me directions.

For example if you were driving away from the hospital on Collier and crossed Howell Mill it would be on the opposide side of Howell Mill on the right. Right there on the corner, if that helps.

Jaw. I could tell you and others things that happened in the late fifties and early sixies that would curl your toes. The Varsity, Starlite Drive-in, Fort Walker, etc. Memories are forever, no one can can take them away.

Do you remember when the late Nipsy Russell worked as a waiter at The Varsity?? I never understood how those guys remembered all the orders without writting anything down. I never could balance what I thought the bill should be to what they said it was. I remeber driving there almost every night after I bought a new 63 1/2 Ford with a 427 cubic inch engine, soilid lifters, and two 4 barrels carbs. It was the same engine that they raced at NASCAR. Most times when I would park it and go inside, I would return and the hood was open and guys were checking out the engine. Spent alot of time during World Series in the Varsity since I did not have a TV set.

Tate - Yes! I remember it and visited it from time to time.
What great young adulthood memories in Atlanta.
And, JIM - "Whaddaya have? Whaddaya have?" A naked dog walking....The Varsity's lingo!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure after all the onion rings I ate, my poor hair needed to be washed from all the grease I took in.
My #1 was born at Piedmont, too. Love Piedmont. They affiliated with Fayette County Hospital and I think are coming to Newnan, where we live...I am thrilled. I have already gone over to Fayetteville for appointments and it is so convenient not to have to drive into Atlanta every time. But when I do drive in, and go down Collier Road...wow....just fun thinking about those days. My building, the old Winecoff apartments behind McNeeley's, have just been torn down (2005). Prime real estate. But I don't know what is going up there. Those apartments were so OLD!!!!!!!! But great location to start the fun for the evening.....

Do not remember Nipsey, but remember Flossie Mae, and #97 Kato, told the 1 arm guy that used the radio, Richard Kimble (FUGITIVE) was after him. Had a 57 Bel Air Hardtop at the time, A Paul McDuffie engineered drag car. The Yellow Jacket had better Hot Dogs than the Varsity, but not the girls.
