Does anyone know if Alabama offers on-line boating registration for out of state (us Atlantans) citizens?

Or,

Where in the Dadeville area (or alex city) you can go to register your boat?

I have found on the Outdoor Alabama website where it states:

"All boat owners may register, renew or transfer ownership at their office of county Judge of Probate or License Commissioner. If not a resident of Alabama, registration can be accomplished, with proof of payment of sales and use tax,at the Marine Police Division office in Montgomery, AL. "

I'm hoping not to have to drive to Montgomery to register. Any info would be much appreciated.

When I was a GA resident, I went to the county courthouse (I'm in Elmore Co) and took my GA boat registrations. They were able to register my boats to my Alabama address within a few minutes.

Where do you keep your boat? I believe AL is just like GA in that they tax the boat where it is kept. Go to the county courthouse where you keep the boat. If you trailer it in from GA I don't think you have to register it in AL - assunming you have a GA registration.

If it's Tallapoosa (Dadeville) then you will have to renew in person each year since they don't mail out renewals (for some reason). I think the renewal date is the owner's birthday month...

Thanks for the information kids!

To answer your question Roswell, our boats are stored on lake martin at our house near at Blue Creek. We registered them in GA when we bought them last year. But . . . we need to register them in AL since this is where they are kept.

I guess I will have to go to the Dadeville Courthouse and register there.

Let me see if I can explain this. If you live in Ga. and have a boat in Al. more than 6 months out of the year it needs to be registered in Al. In Ga. you have to pay personal property tax, in Al. you do not. If you live in Ga. and buy a used boat in Ga. have it registered in Ga., when you get the regristion complete in Ga. common sale no sales tax, then have it registered in Al. no property tax. In Al. you would have to pay sales tax.

There is a sign shop just outside the courthouse in Dadeville where you can buy your numbers

I beg to differ. I feel the taxes are so high they should come to my place with the new decals and place them on the boat themselves. The prop taxes have skyrocketed in the last decade with no new amenities to enjoy from them. Just my "umble" view.

Huh? I haven't seen that yet. I figured that the assessor would start eyeballing the Lake folks sooner or later with the recent runup in prices. You get hit?

It should be a two edged sword though. If we pay more we should get more.

Property taxes in Alabama are second lowest in the Nation. Only Arkansas has lower property tax. If tax payers in Alabama have a complaint, it should be with your high sales tax. It more than double the sales tax of Virginia which is 4.5%. Virginia property tax is at least four or five times Alabama's for the value of the property (comparing apples to apples).

What you get for your taxes paid may depend upon your perspective. I have no children, but I do pay taxes for other folk to send their children to public schools. No complaint there, but I do complain about poor roads, poor police services and etc. which is just as bad anywhere else I have lived as it is in Alabama. Alabama also does not have personal property tax. Count yourself lucky again.
