I have several questions about the area bordering the southeastern part of the lake.

1) I understand that the area across from Chimney Rock- or maybe the entire area that formed the gorge there before the river was dammed- used to be called the Deadening. What's the origin of the name?

2) Similarly, why is the area down closer to the dam called Cherokee Ridge, especially when the original inhabitants of this part of Alabama were Creeks?

3) Finally, there's a grave in a cemetery near the lake that has a stone alligator on top of it. The alligator is in three parts, to make it appear partially submerged as it would be in the water. Does anyone know the story behind this?

1. That area is shallow and only got water when there was a lot of rainfall. It was bowl shaped and steep until they built the lake and knocked out the ends. Animals would get caught in there looking for water and slowly died of thirst. Hence it was called a deadening area.

2. Right before the creek wars that culminated at Horseshoe Bend the Creeks captured a band of Cherokee's that were friendy to Andrew Jackson and sacrificed them to their war god on the ridge. Hence Cherokee Ridge

3. There used to be a grouchy old man that would come visit his sister's grave and a neighbor played a practical joke by putting the gator there to have some fun, kind of like this post.

THAT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE MY FATHER'S GRAVE SIGHT. IF ITS THE SAME SIGHT MY DAD'S AT IT WOULD BE LOCATED THE CORNER OF THE OVERLOOK RD AND HWY 50 (WALNUT HILL) . CARTER' BLUE IT WOULD BE AMAZING IF IT'S THE SAME GRAVE SIGHT. MY SISTER FOUND THAT ALLIGATOR AND NEW SHE HAD TO HAVE IT FOR MY FATHER'S GRAVE SIGHT. HE HAD BOUGHT A MARINA AND FISH CAMP IN WACASSA FL.AND THERE WHERE ALWAYS ALLIGATORS EVERYWHERE . THEY WHERE LIKE PETS TO US,FUNNY HOW YOU CAN FEED SOMETHING LONG ENOUGH THAT THEY BECOME TAME. SORRY TO BE LONG WINDED.
