Subject:   Question for Big Boaters
Date:   3/30/2006 6:22:43 PM

The threads below about the money behind the big boat proposal raises an interesting question. Put aside for the moment that everybody interested in this issue is coming from a selfish perspective - you want to drive your boat whereever you want, the supporters of the bill want to increase the value of the real estate investment, don't like big boats for safety, noise or congestion reasons, etc. The question I think is interesting is why you think the sponsors of the legislation are so financially interested? Why do they think they will profit from the legislation? As someone down the board points out, Russell would lose marina income, but he thinks Russell would be in favor because of the real estate development $$$. Why is that? Why would any of these supporters, who everyone would have to agree are pretty sophisiticated, bottom line business people, care about the size or speed of boats on the lake?

In order for there to be a conspiracy there must be some profit involved somewhere? Why do some of you think Russel, just for instance, would give up Marina revenue to support this (assuming they are, which I don't know). Why do they think it is in their financial interest for the big boats to go away?

I don't know all the angles but I can't see one here. I don't think they have figured out if this is good or bad. They are probably wondering the net economic effect like most of us...I think most of the conspiracy stuff is just entertainment for the mind....

My interest in this issue is not selfish. I don't have one of the boats that will be impacted but I do live full time on the lake. I clearly come from a different area - one where there are no restrictions on the lake, where Bill Gates and Paul Allen park whatever size boats they choose, where there is no speed limit and where property values have soared. Please don't tie the success of this bill to property values - the outcomes are not related. I grew up on a lake where there are no restrictions anywhere as opressive as those proposed. And FYI, I have spoken with some individuals at Russell - they do not support this bill. Progesss will certainly come, as many have mentioned, and it will come whether this legislation passes or not.

What revenue are they giving up?

All boats over 30' 6" -are grandfathered in sail-boats xcluded

IF: they are moored at a marina w/certified pump-out station--- not at your house but a marina with pump-out---- can you say SLIP RENT JUST WENT UP--
How many boats does Russell sell over 31'--- very few---Most are bought elsewhere and brought in--- Russell tried to sell go-fast boats last year---
You could drive 200 miles and save $50k --no longer sells them--
Go fast boats are not kept in the water-- mostly on lifts or trailered in--
ALL have till July 1 to get off lake--- no lost revenue to Russell except maybe alot of gas.

Russell sells cruiser boats 28-31'--- all legal

a 23 ft bass boat running 90 legal
a 26' cat boy boat running 130 legal
a27' FOUTAIN running 60 NOT LEGAL
a 30' RUSSELL MARINE SEA RAY plowing 4'ers legal
a RUSSELL SEA-DOO running 70 legal

All cruisers MUST ALWAYS pay the marina--- rent goes up-up-up-up or ELSE

or buy a 31 ft from Russell and be FREE--

All marina slips will stay full--- Russell contine to sell WAKE BOARD BOATS & 26'-31' Cruisers --- I mIght just get me one of BOTH---- big waves are coming--- might get me one of them dang sea-doos--- "will it go around in circles" in YOUR slough --- I wake up early.

NO its not RIGHT-- ITS ALL ABOUT $$$$$$$$$ Power Co sells 3500acreas on Lkae Harris

WONDER--- Could Russell sell 3500acreas to the same Develop. from Ga. maybe around the Ski Club---- nice resort with lots -lots- lots-lots-lots of them dang sea-doos --- prob. sell 3500 sea-doos

TELL me - LOST WHAT REVENUE?

Got their CAKE and eating TOO!

This should have been a STATE WIDE VOTE---
NOT Lobbying it through

Baypine Yankee, you are incorrect, RUSSELL does support the bill, and Pontoon brings up very good points. I think he is right on the money with his opinions.

no, Catboat, you are wrong on this one. Russell does not support the bill. I agree, Pontoon does make some good points - my point is that the outcome of this bill will not in any impact property values long term on this lake.

Whatever your opinion Baypine, I respect it. Call Russell Lands atty, or call your local Senator or House Rep. They will tell you that Russell supports the bill.

As I do yours Cat. I have discussed the legislation with their house counsel and one of their senior executives. They told me that they did not support it. After that I didn't feel it was necessary to discuss it with one of the local politicians. I wish you and your business well - great webpage.

I have enjoyed the forum but think I will back away. I guess I will be known as a "lurker". Perhaps not if I don't read or post.

Peace

Better check again Russell was behind this Bill in a big way.

Pontoon obviously thinks there is a motive to make $$ from real estate sales here. My question is why does he think Russel and/or the Power Company or the developers of Harris think that this legislation has anything to do with property values? Anybody who agrees with Pontoon is welcome to join in.
