there hasn't been anything said on the forum about Anchor Bay Marina catching on fire? I mean, Babygirl posted a message to/about him but I noticed no one else has.

I think this is VERY sad.

Something as serious as someone's (a fellow poster)
place catching on fire, and no one can see through the "big boat ban" fog.
Won't most of you with big boats be grandfathered in? I understand it to mean (forgive me if I'm wrong) this will just keep other larger boats from coming in. I'm also thinking this will only keep those of you who already have big boats from buying newer or bigger boats? Was everyone planning on selling their boats and buying a new one?
I do understand 'a little' about all the fuss, but like someone said "it's all in Riley's hands now." So just wait to see what he has to say.

Until then, come on your guys,..... Anchor Bay Don had a fire!
Be a little sympathetic.

Go to www.WFSA.com there's a write up about it there. I don't know how much damage was done, but they were able to control it before it got to the gas tanks. There's also a comment that Anchor Bay Don made that makes you wonder how it might have started. Hope they don't find it to be arson though.

Here's what the news station had to say,....
Sorry, I wasn't sure I could copy/paste.

WSFA reported..........
Part of Lake Martin's Anchor Bay Marina caught fire on Thursday, leaving many people considering themselves fortunate.

The fire started just after daybreak, and it threatened to be much worse than it actually was. Firefighters were able to control the flames before they hit two ten-thousand gallon fuel tanks nearby. The owner of the marina, Don Sibert, opposed the Legislature's most recent boat banning bill on Lake Martin. He hopes the fire was not retribution.

There's also a video from a large boat owner on Lake Martin. I don't know who he is,.... has a boat named "The Office".
Thought some might be interested in this also.

I'm glad no one was hurt, and that the damage was not more severe; Anchor Bay is still my favorite marina on the lake, and the one that gets the vast majority of my business.

That being said, two points:

If it turns out that the fire was accidental, I hope Don apologizes for the remark that might lead some to believe that it was not. There is enough animosity in the air right now; it doesn't need to be fueled.

And I find it interesting that Don is referred to in the story as the "owner" of Anchor Bay, when he has posted here that he is not the owner any longer, but just someone who works for the company that now owns it.

But the most important point... is again that no one was hurt, and that the damage wasn't worse; hopefully, things will be back to normal ASAP at Anchor Bay.

just FYI... it was not the owner of "The office" that just happened to show on the film.

Ok, I'm coming clean. I was the one interviewed by WSFA. They gave my family a 20 minute window of opportunity to make a statement. The interview with me was the only reason WSFA was at Anchor Bay. It just so happens that the fire was the same morning, and obviously they would want to make two stories out of one. I was standing right next to Don when he told the reporter that he was the previous owner and that his wife is now the manager of Anchor Bay. WSFA made that error. When Don gave his interview the fire Marshall/inspector had not shown up yet. His statement that he hopes it was not set because of his backing of the bill was him stating a possible motive for the fire and he has every right of freedom of speech to voice his concerns/thoughts whether they are valid or otherwise. As he stated, he wishes that it was a pure freak accident.

As for my time with the camera, everything on the news gets edited. They did not show the name of my boat, although they filmed it from close-up. I am not ashamed of any of my posts, or my wife’s posts on this subject matter. I only wish that the law would include scientific justification (or even state the obvious business justification). AND I wish the general public would have been given its ten seconds on the soap box.

I have stated that this bill actually will increase the value of our “Grand-fathered” boats. That still does not make it right. I listened to the Senate audio online. There were amendments offered that would ban the use of PWC during the evening and early morning hours AND this proposed amendment included ALL Alabama lakes. There was also talk about banning “floating condo’s”, and condos on pilings, in addition to the banning of multiple other items.

Anyhow, I would have hated to miss the opportunity for my opinion to be aired on the media, regardless of the outcome. I only wish they would have given us enough time to rally some more supporters (20 minutes).

There was a fire on the porch of the store adjacent to the ramp going to the fuel pumps. The fire was reported at 7 AM on Thursday. There was no sources of ignition (electrical, motors, etc) anywhere near the area of the fire. We could not figure how it started, so we had to figure that some person did it.. This morning, the State Fire Marshell investigated and, found the 'probable cause'.

Believe it or not, we are guessing that someone put out a cigarette in a planter box on the porch and that the soil caught fire and smoldered until the planter caught and took everything else with it. The agent proved this theory by taking soil from an adjacent planter out to the parking lot and igniting it! That potting soil has a lot of peat moss and is very dry from the winter and it began to glow red.

We are very forunate as the fire consumed the deck, rafters, and supports to within 28 inches of our primary fuel lines going to the fuel dock. That would have been horrific!

We will be open for business this weekend in spite of this. The WSFA reporter was here to cover the boat ban passage, knew my position on it, and made a suspected retribution issue out of it. Thanks to all who expressed concern and my apologies to anyone if they thought I was accusing them.

Thanks Big Boat Owner AND Anchor Bay Don for the info.
I'm glad Big Boat Owner was given his time to speak and that Anchor Bay Don is able to continue business as usual without too much damage.
"Someone up stairs" was surely looking after your gas tanks for you!
