My husband and I just purchased land on Smith Lake for our retirement. (Dismal Bay subdivision in Arley.) We currently live in Southold, NY. We were in Alabama a few weeks ago to close on the land. We just love the area. You folks are so friendly and we are looking forward to moving to your wonderful state. We are Civil War buffs and find ourselves more on the side of the Rebels than the Yankees, so hope y'all will welcome us and that we can be an asset to the community. Looking forward to hearing from some of you.

Welcome to Alabama!
As for the Civil War. Take a look at the history of Winston County (Arley is in Winston County) before you choose sides. The county has an interesting history with a twist.

You're going to love Smith Lake, and the folks that call it home.

Thanks for responding, Neil. You are the first!

I just googled Winston County and the Civil War. ("Looney's" tavern sounds like a fun place) Ha. But they never seceded? Why did they want to? And why did they not follow through? I will have to research further, but I've got 27 people coming for Easter luncheon in about an hour!

Welcome to the neighborhood!! MY wife and I are just around the point at the mouth of Dismal. We live in South Pointe sub-division on the right as you head toward Duncan Bridge.

Nice to meet ya. Don't know when we'll actually be selling our house up here, and building and moving down there. Probably 2-3 years. But my husband will be popping down every now and then to clear the property, etc.

Before coming to Alabama and being accepted.... it is imperative that you learn the correct pronunciation of Y'ALL, learn to eat grits (that also means "girls raised in the south"), and know how to cook turnip greens with backbone correctly......

Also, you need to learn how much a 'mess' is, that 'fixin' to' means 'getting ready to' (nothing to do with repairs), all tea is sweet, and that you 'pitch a hissy fit', not 'have a hissy fit'. 'Have a come-apart' is when you go beyond the hissy fit.

One more thing, don't let anybody convince you to root for Auburn, around Smith Lake it's ROLL TIDE baby!

I have no idea what you just said; but look on the bright side. Y'all can have a fun time laughing at us at community gatherings. :o)

I am also a Yankee. Born in NJ, and lived in FL and IN. Moved to the Huntsville area (which has a lot of transplants)after college to for job . I married an Alabama boy (aka turnipgreen on this site), been here 16 years, and have grown to love this area. The people are friendly, traffic is not bad, cost of living is good, etc. My family has said I've developed an accent - I do say ya'll, but haven't picked up "fixen" yet. Some other saying's I've learned from my hubby's family include: Blow's like rain ( that wind you feel when there's a storm nearyby) and cold enough to kill a pig.

We aren't full time lake people, but we hope to eventually retire there.

But in our defense, I can tell when it is about to rain, and before the invention of the freezer it helped to know when it was cold enough to kill a pig.

As long as you are friendly, everyone will fit in around here.

Hi there Yanks. Back to your question about Winston Co. during the war. They did not align with the Confederacy because they didn't have a dog in the fight...no plantations and almost no slaves in Winston Co. But they didn't go through with their own secession because they knew better. Not very smart to do that when you're surrounded.

By the way, when you move to this state you must decide if you're going to pull for the University of Alabama or Auburn (we're talking college football if you're wondering). You cannot avoid this issue. After a reasonable grace period, you must declare. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. You'll find Smith Lake folks about 2 to 1 Alabama fans...or maybe its 3 to 1. Roll Tide!

Welcome! Nice to have you as neighbors.

The next question you must be prepared to answer is: "Where do you go to church?"

That would be the "War of Northern Agression"....
