Here is what we know about the accident: A friend of ours had a relative involved in the accident and the details are sketchy. Apparently 2 high powered speed boats were both running approx. 75 miles per hour and they met each other around a blind corner and collided. One person was life flighted and all others were lucky. Boat owners wife in critical condition and we are still trying to find out more details.

I saw part of a news coverage on TV last night about this accident. They showed footage of one of the boats being retreived from the lake. As they pulled it out on a trailer, one could see that it was a cigarette boat. It was white with the typical zig zag red sticker on the side. I certainly hope everyone recovers from this accident. I do not know the full story. I heard just part of the news cast.

With a lot of luck and help from the new boating restrictions maybe Lake Martin won't have to live with such an unfortunate accident. Gee, haven't heard from the loud, fast crowd about this avoidable accident.

I predict denial, followed by spin. By the end of the day, they'll be claiming that the big bad speedboat was actually a victim.

Some people never learn. And I'm talking about those people who still think that its okay to have those lethal water rockets on this lake. Maybe if all the drivers had a courteous, safety first mindset it would be different, but you only have to read some of the posts on the other boards to see how they really think.

According to all the news reports it was not the Formula's (or high powered speed boats ) fault.

Cornpone,OSMS and RealityCheck where do you get your info at . Truth is there was a Doctor and his family in a Formula idling away from there dock when a runabout boat with a outboard motor slammed into them with no lights on. Several people went to the hospital but I hear everyone will be all right .
Wonder what your come back to this post will be?

>>I predict denial, followed by spin. By the end of the day, they'll be claiming that the big bad speedboat was actually a victim.<<

Denial and Spin: >>According to all the news reports it was not the Formula's (or high powered speed boats ) fault.

Victimization: >>a Formula idling away from there dock when a runabout boat with a outboard motor slammed into them with no lights on.

My comeback is, Thanks for making my point, and much faster than I thought you would. It only took two hours and two posts for you to get to the point where the Water Rocket was the victim.

Look at the statistics yourself. (See URL below) Large speed boats are classified as a cabin motorboat. Size of vessle has nothing to do with safety, its the carelessness of the captain. There will be boating accidents this year. As a matter of fact, while you were waiting for an accident to happen involving a large boat (you are congratulated on your patience) count the number of accidents involving all other boats. You seem happy to report that someone suffered property damage and that people were injured. Are you sick? People loose their life every day from boating accidents which should have been avoided. ALL boats can kill you. I think you have a problem with the owners of big boats and not big boats themselves. This is a classic case of prejudice. You have categorized big boat owners. I have no problem with that, we all seem to have similar desires. The problem I have is that you think someone has the right to criminalize the use of these vessles. The law was baseless and there are no statistics or scientific evidence that houseboats, cabin cruisers, or speed boats are causing any problems other than the fact that you do not like us. You are a narrow-minded pompass twit. Get over the fact that big boat owners are loud, and obnoxious. Its what we do and enjoy. You also need to get over the fact that wakeboarders are also loud and obnoxious, and PWC's are loud and obnoxious, and that fishermen speed around the lake and park and fish you dock. It just what they do. Get over it.

>>big boat owners are loud, and obnoxious. Its what we do and enjoy.

So you admit it. Now can you go one step further and try to understand why being loud and obnoxious is a big turn-off for everyone else? Stop acting surprised that no one likes you or wants you around, since you obviously take pride in making yourself as unwanted and unpopular as possible.

Now about the bogus stats you linked. Yes, numbers don't lie. But sometimes, people who throw numbers around do lie, or at least ignore the numbers that will kill their argument. Of course smaller boats are in more accidents, because there are more small boats out there. Using your logic, you would admit that you'd rather fly a commercial airliner piloted by a blind two-year old than a licensed pilot, because there have been way more crashes involving licensed pilots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact there has never been a commercial plane that crashed that was piloted by a blind two year old, so obviously they are much better pilots!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too bad they don't make you take an intelligence test before you're allowed to buy a big boat.

The percentage of large boats registered compared the percentage of small bats registered was used to compare the percentage of accidents. There is a close correlation. My point was that no size class boat has an advantage/disadvantage of safety from looking at the statistics.

I am proud to identify who I am. I have been known to be loud and obnoxious. I choose to hang out in a non-populated area of the lake with others just like me. If this action offends you, simply don't come around. My point is that this is America and tolerance is the law. It is also legal for me to park 20 feet from your shoreline and hang out (assuming you live on the lake), but I do have some discretion as to where and when I choose to be obnoxious. 44000 acres, I would think you could find an area of the lake without boaters hanging out enjoying themselves to enjoy whatever it is that you do.

Last I knew personality and character are not related to intelligence, and none of these qualities are prerequisites for people to enjoy themselves.

I am curious, explain to me what you would do differently if there were no boats on the water over 26 feet. You are still going to have to deal with me and my kind. There is absolutely nothing you can do to keep people from trailoring their boats to the lake, and this includes the out-of-staters who this bill was intended to keep away. Why don’t you stop by some-time and explain your point to me. Maybe I will shut up long enough to listen. Maybe not. Regardless, I would be tolerant of your presence.

Are you convinced that a bass boat at 40+ mph will not kill alot of people in the event of a crash? The lake will be safe from boaters when it is once again a river. The dam will not last forever...

Hey guys I didn't abandon RealityCheck--I had work to do. We've had responses from 'fountain', 'big boat owner', and 'scarab man'. Why is it that you have to have an alias that identifies you with your boat or the boat you want? I've been a 'big boat owner' for 25 years, but I never have seen a need to advertise it. What's up?

OSMS don't weasle your way out of this . You and your buddies have been waiting for a Big Boat accident to happen and when It did ya'll jump right in with both feet !! Instead of showing concern for the people injured, you showed your @ss about something you didn't have the facts about. Say your wrong and we'll go on to the next topic!

For myself it was a way of identifying myself as someone who would be affected by the boat ban. An alias is just that. I guess I should change my alias to criminal now that the law has passed? The reason we use these names is because people can associate us with our names when we meet up at the lake. It is called name recognition... My boat has a name printed on it, perhaps I will change my alias to that so when you see me you can waive and stop in to BS with us...?

Who said it was a 'Big Boat' accident?? It was reported to be a fast boat accident. Accidents can happen to anyone on the lake at anytime. The best way to prevent serious accidents is to reduce the components that cause accidents--speed, stupidity, and alcohol. Somehow these three components usually are involved when a serious accident occurs.

I mentioned loud, fast crowd because you guys are so d@mned defensive about the love of your life I figured you'd already be in the middle of the discussion. Now back to my question...

Personally, the greatest fear I have on the lake are PWC drivers. They rarely know what is going on around them; who's behind them, beside them, how fast they're going relative to others, and I believe they gain the privilege to kill you when they're 12 years old.

Divided once again as a boating community! I have been busy lately, and have not had time to spend here on this site. You will hear why soon. Yall stop this before we become divided again. As I look at the accident, it was not a "big boat, fast boat, little boat thing", but a bad accident. Wish it would have never happened. Yall play safe and enjoy the times we have on the water.
