My wife and I have had a lake place for about 16 years and have lived here full time since 1998. I have never submitted to the forum due to the fact that we really don't like controversy. However, I feel the need to at least try to settle some of this. As a beginning, we don't have a large boat and began our wonderful life here on the lake with a canoe, graduated to a ski boat and now have a pontoon boat which we love. To be very honest, if we could afford a larger boat as some on the lake, we would have it. Some and probably most with the larger boats don't, or can not afford $500,000 plus for a "cabin" on the lake and their joy is being able to use their boats for fun and enjoyment. I am not saying that I agree or disagree with the new boating law, but I will say that there is a solution for everyone. Those within the law have a right to enjoy this lake as everyone. My wife and I have not gone to the 4th of July fireworks for quite some time. The last time we went, there were hundreds of much larger boats and our ski boat was too small for the area. The solution..stay out of the area and let those people enjoy! In other words, if there is too much traffic for your boat, do as we do, go somewhere else and let your fellow boaters do their thing. I must say also, that courtesy on a day to day basis is the key. I ask those with the larger boats and PWC's to try to stay in open water away from the bays so as to not irritate those that live there. Again, courtesy is the key to harmony.

In other words, there was something you wanted to do, but couldn't, because your boat was too small. So, you got left out. That doesn't seem fair, does it? Yes, the big boats have rights, but don't you have rights, too?
I guess when you say "Those within the law have a right to enjoy this lake as everyone," by "everyone" you mean "except for people like me." I wonder which of the things you enjoy will be taken from you next?

I aggree with what you say but I have discovered that on the 4th of July people come out of the woodworks. One of the scariest times I have ever had on the lake in a boat was on the 4th. It had nothing to do with the size of the boats but the quantity. I was cruising around from Parker Creek towards Real Island and on the way back going towards Kowliga I was one of about 8 boats going east and there were about that number going west. I prayed that everyone would hold the wheel straight...which they did.
I don't do much boating on the 4th any more. I have discovered that those of us who are fortunate enough to be able enjoy the lake Monday - Thursday can have peacful boating most of the time.

We left town this Memorial weekend and I think it may be a good idea for the future three holiday weekends of the summer. Except for those three weekends the lake is manageable for the other 357 days or so.
I remember trying to fly out of New Orleans on Friday before Mardi Gras one year and couldn't find a parking place anywhere close to the airport. Then I figured out that all the smart citizens got the he!! out of town to avoid the idiots. Good idea!!

Thanks for your most generous comments. I try very hard to have an open mind. Life is too short to live with a knot in your stomach and worry about things, especially the present and future development of our home lake as no one can change that. As you know, we all have seen a lot of changes. And as you say, those of us whom are fortunate enough to enjoy the lake during the week when there is virtually no traffic are far and beyond the word "lucky". We sit on our porch, and stay off the lake on major holidays and let those that are not so fortunate have a great time on the most beautiful lake in the world. God bless

Kingfish and Queenfish please post often your positive and openminded attitude is very much needed. It is nice to hear from folks that are fulltimers and have adjusted over the years to the popularity of the Lake Martin. Hope to be in your shoes one day. Have a great weekend.

I hope you are in our shoes one day. Life is beautiful if you make it that way, regardless of the problems in every day life. I and Mrs. Queenfish have had ours, healthwise and many other ways. My reason for posting was just to try to get people to the see the brighter side and don't complain about things and look for reasons to argue. As I said before, life is too short for that and the clock could stop at any time. Is all the controversy worth it? I don't think so. I will most likely not post much because we don't want to get into other people's lives, but I just ask all to step back for a moment and recount the good times as opposed to the bad. I think you will find the good times outnumber the bad. As always, God bless
