I was just wondering if anybody knows exactly what kind if birds those are that have been soaring around The Rock most of this summer?
I really enjoy watching them. They are very large and powerful. I watched them for 30 minutes Saturday and they never flapped their wings. They were just gliding in the wind. I thought they might be Osprey but I looked them up and the pictures don't match. Maybe they are some type of an Eagle, I don't know? If anybody has any ideas please let me know.

I agree about the idiots jumping off the rocks, but the birds are not buzzards.

An Osprey sighting around here would be rare indeed....thought about red-tail hawks but they're not into the gliding too much and seemingly pair up...have never seen more than 2 at one time......

There is a huge nest in the top of a tree on the island before Chimney Rock but I have never seen any thing fly in or out of it. These birds are definitely not Buzzards or Hawks, but they are rather large and they can do some serious soaring. I have heard and read about Eagles and Osprey being spotted on the lake but I don't know what these are.

The huge nest is, in fact, an eagle's nest. I didn't see any fledglings in it this year, but in previous years I did.
The birds you're seeing are most likely Turkey Vultures, also known as Turkey Buzzards.

I just looked up some info on Turkey Vultures or Buzzards and the birds I have seen at The Rock are definitely not Buzzards. They don't look anything like the pictures plus Buzzards or Vultures usually fly in circles and in large groups. I have only seen two of these at a time and they just seem to glide around whever the wind takes them mostly right in the area on both sides of the water around the islands. They are black with a white shape under their wings, neck and tail.

Longtimer, the nest you refer to is in fact bald eagles. And they did have babies this year. Around memorial day if you were watching closely you could spot them sitting on the edge of the nest contemplating their first flat. My favorite part is when mom would soar back and land beside them. Such a beautiful sight.
But lets all please respect them, and their nest. This is a very rare thing and we are very lucky to have them on our lake!

Most probably juvenile bald eagles. Their heads don't go white till they are 4-5 years old. We are VERY lucky to have 3 nesting pairs around the lake, and I have heard rumor of a fourth but have not seen any confirmation on it. There has been a nesting pair at the dam since the early 80's but for years teh nest wa only visible from guard shack area of the dam. The tree it was in finally broke under the massive weight of the nest. That is when they moved to Chimney Rock Island. The DARE Park couple have given me some AWESOME shows in the past few years. They are magnificent creatures.
FYI- they are also off the endangered species list now. Still protected though so please don't mess with them.

I'm sorry I didn't get to see the chicks this year; on the other hand, I feel fortunate to have seen some in the past. Spectacular and awesome aren't good enough words to describe it.

I saw a Bald Eagle close to Wind Creek State park during the 4th of July weekend. I was over there fishing early that Sunday morning and saw him/her sitting in a Large dead pine. I got some pretty good pictures of it. I watched one of the ones at Chimney rock catch a fish one morning while i was fishing. I wish i would have had a video camera.

I have been blessed to see them fishing in my slough 3 different times either as the water raises or receeds and it gets shallow. The first time was a miss, the second a catch and the third a catch but the fish flopped loose at about 10-15ft. There was a dead fish floating later though so I think the talons inflicted a fatal blow.
It is truly a magnificent sight to see!!
