I was in a sewing class today and a lady there was talking with me about the accidents on the lake this year. She has a place on the lake and said that the accident this weekend happened in front of her cabin. She is between Indian Shores and Old Bama Park. The lady had fallen off her jet ski and another boat ran over her and killed her instantly. She said that alcohol was involved with the driver of the boat.

Hope that helps someone.

the media is not reporting on this??? You have heard the same details that I have(and more). We live in the general area and never heard a thing. Bottom line, someone was killed, why are they not reporting it??? Very SAD!!! Maybe, one day, people will understand that the lake is for enjoyment and safety and respect of others always comes FIRST!!!!!!!!!

I know. I wish I could find out who it was that was killed. We have a place at old Bama Park that we are trying to sell and I found out today that our neighbors there have had a death in their family. Could be coincidence (sp) but could be related. I know they have a daughter close to my age and they also have a PWC. If anyone finds out the name of the person who was killed could let me know I would appreciate it.

I wonder if the media isn't reporting it because the lake has already had so much bad reports this summer?

Yep, my thinking exactly. Wish I knew more details but I don't. Very disturbing on this end.

Except for the death, your story sounds a lot like this story:

Two injured in Lake Martin boating accidents
By Kevin Taylor

Two people were hospitalized in two separate boating accidents on Saturday, according to Alabama Marine Police Sgt. Gary Buchanan.

One accident involved two boats, while the other involved a personal watercraft that crashed into a boat's wake.

Michella Crawford, 29, of Montgomery suffered non-life-threatening injuries when she and fellow rider Donald Eckis, 31, of Opelika were thrown from the craft after slamming into a wake.

Crawford was airlifted to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment, while Eckis was arrested and charged by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Department for boating under the influence and operating a watercraft without a license, according to Lt. Mitford Fontain.

Eckis was later released on $1,000 bond.

The accident, which was reported around 7 p.m., occurred near the Indian Shores Subdivision, according to Fontain.

"I think she lost consciousness when she fell into the water," Fontain said. "So they had her lifeflighted to Opelika."

Earlier in the day, a teenage driver of one boat ran into another near the Parker Creek area in Coosa County, sending one passenger of the second boat to the hospital with cuts sustained from shattered glass.

"The operator was distracted when he dropped his iPod," Buchanan said. "He tried to pick it up and ran into the boat."

Doug Brasell, 30, of Millbrook was treated and released from Russell Medical Center after being cut by the glass.

"It's fortunate that no one was seriously hurt or killed," Buchanan said.

I'm mystified as to why the Montgomery office of the Marine Police did not know anything about these accidents. I talked to a female lieutenant, who I assume was the info officer. Also, why it was Tuesday before the media reported it. Maybe these accidents were worked by the Sheriff''s office or the Game Warden or something.

It sems to me we are beginning to have a real safety problem on the lake and we need to see more Marine Police on patrol.

My husband and I were talking about this yesterday. We have a place at Old Bama Park we are trying to sell and bought another place in Coosa County last fall. We spent the summer this year at the new place and noticed a big difference in traffic where we are. It is much quieter at the new place than the old place. I remember last summer seeing more "kids" who looked under age on PWC and not paying attention to what they are doing.

wait until they conplete the condos in Stillwaters--and that public housing looking complex on the red hill side of Blue Creek. That'll dump another 200-300 boats in that area.

in another part of the lake that is quieter. Now if we could just sell the other place everything will be fine and dandy.

At the new place on the 4th of July weekend it was so quiet. It was almost like it wasn't a holiday.

(sorry,d@mned enter button). I didn't say anything about you or anyone else being "welcomed"---the question is do YOU want to be in the Blue Creek area under discussion after all those additional boaters are unleashed.

I can't give any definite answers, but here are a couple of theories:

The media didn't report it until Tuesday because they didn't know about it before then; they probably received the report on Monday (after that day's paper had been printed,) did a little follow-up, and ran the story on Tuesday.

Also, if the accidents in the story are the same as those that were rumored, are they really big news? We have a couple of non-life threatening injuries and some boating-under-the-influence, hardly the stuff that sells papers.

My real point was: Why did the Marine Patrol not know these accidents had occurred on Tuesday when I called?

The Marine Police (the ones in the trenches) are the ones in the know. My experience with the HQ in Montgomery was the same as yours. This begs the question: What do they really do in Montgomery? Once again, I wish to say that our Marine Police on LM do a great job and I'm glad we got 'em!

Even better than just another few hundred boats on that already congested end of the lake, how about all the rental boats and PWCs that will show up? A good business opp. but I don't look forward to navigating with them....

READING ALL OF THIS REGARDING THIS AREA OF THE LAKE BECOMING OVERCROWDED MAKES THE NORTH END OF THE LAKE EVEN MORE ATTRACTIVE AND SAFER!

I already am in Blue Creek. In a condo. With a boat. (I love my condo--it has no yard).

I suppose it is natural that the old timers want the lake to themselves.

I don't mind the boats in Blue Creek. It seems like there are a lot of them on holiday weekends but I was up there last weekend and it was pretty quiet. What bothers me is the number of people cruising about with their fenders hanging over the side. Tacky, tacky. Also, I have yet to see a properly cleated line in LM, except on my boat.

we kid about the "fenders" as well....they are ready to dock at anytime! what are they affraid of? why do they have to leave their buoys hanging over the edge of their boat? i always assume it is an inexperienced boater, and i try to stay away from them. i find that annoying as well.

My post was not a slam on condo dwellers, but on the impact they will have on the Lake. High density housing means high density boating. Very few people I have ever met in my life like high density boating - maybe you do-and if that is the case you're in the right place.

As for properly cleating a line, my wife has been boating for 35 years and she has never learned that simple task---Come to think of it, I haven't seen too many lost boats floating by themselves around the lake so I guess the locals do pretty well at tieing their boats to a post, tree or cleat.
As for the fenders, most people here are all go and no show. If you want to cruise at dusk, who wants to mess with fenders--just let'em hand. BY THE WAY, FENDERS WOULD NOT BE NEEDED IF ALL BOATERS KEPT THEIR DISTANCE FROM PRIVATE DOCKS. FENDERS ARE SIGNS THAT OTHER IDIOTS ARE BOATING IN THE AREA

I'm confident it would have been in papers. Nobody is going to try to cover it up for the sake of Lake Martin and bad press.

It is my understanding that emergency crews (paramedics, police, etc) are so acustomed to their jobs that they do not discuss the happenings of previous days. This would waste too much of their times. They brief current activity, conditions, etc. Alot of them never follow up on these things because they don't want to know whether or not the person subsequently died.

If a boater is not savvy enough, or professional enough to pull his fenders onboard, that is some evidence he is dangerous. It's not conclusive evidence, but it is some evidence, as you noted.

There are lots of places with worst boaters. I used to live in Ft. Myers with people from Illinois and Iowa who were probably proficient in prairie schooners, but had no business in a Hatteras.

Biggest problem on this lake is lack of consideration for other boaters. Most think NO WAKE means that you are supposed slow down until your boat is barely off plane (maximum wake). Obviously they never look behind them. Also, they like to get a good look at your dock, house and your teeth--so they boat by 'barely off plane' and 30 feet from your docked boat (that's why people have fenders).

If you can master these faults you are welcome to the lake--forget the cleating.

You are dead on the money. The thing that makes me crazy is these "plowboys" that are either so ignorant or arrogant that they just plow on by wreaking havoc on every dock & boat they pass. I'd rather they come by at full plane than plow it up.

Unfortunately they will always be with us and you are not allowed to shoot them ......

Actually I have owned, over the past 50 years, a couple of bateau, some ski boats, an offshore fishing boat, a couple of cruising bluewater sailboats, and my present boat, which is a 25 foot pontoon boat powered by a real quiet Honda. Although a native of Alabama I spent most of my life on the Carolina coast where people really know boats.

Now that I am back in Alabama (part time) I am willing to go with the flow, even the flow interrupted by fenders bouncing around, now that OSM sort of welcomes me to the lake.

D@amnit ric, you were right--he is a "sailboat person". Reckon that's why he worries about cleating and fenders ---he has plenty of time to ponder such nuances of life.

What a great site. I was actually looking for a site with knot tying basics. I'm really lousy at that. The docking graphics will be great for my kids who are having a problem with the effect on the wind..

I agree with you Osms on the consideration point...but I would also add boating experience and training. I really am saddened about all of these accidents. I had to retire all of my old boats a couple of years ago and just bought a new Wave Runner last month.

My oldest son can't wait to ride it....just one little problem. He doesn't have his vessel liscense. I sent him to the web sit to study and he can then take and pass the test. Then I will meet him at the lake and we will have Daddy training. Then he can buy $100 woth of gas and have fun...riding...not diving.

As for the bumpers...I suspect if those worried about the bumpers hanging out see my old Beverly Hillbilles pontoon boat coming ( that looks pretty used because it has been battered by so many storms) they would never notice the bumpers flapping @ top speen (about 12 knots).
