Noticed that the old auto parts storefront near the intersection of 49/34 south of Dadeville is apparently going to be the newest internet sweepstakes location in the state. Some temporary signage up, looks like they're expanding the parking. Great. That'll help the area a lot I'm sure.

It was a pretty bad location for an auto parts store, but I'm curious to see if this is actually a bad location for this "business" as well. Just seems pretty remote to everyone other than lake folks, and I just don't see that many folks who are traveling 34 to Still Waters, Pleasure Point and points in between being drawn in that much by this site. I may be wrong.

From a probability standpoint you'd be just about as well off setting your money on fire in the parking lot. As I understand it, the house advantage is well beyond the .5% a "perfect" blackjack player is giving up. Happy betting!

They are nothing more than video gambling games that are connected to the internet. The same type of opertions that are at the dog tracks. No table games YET!

The businesses sell you a phone card that you use to play with, and also get cut of the proceeds from each terminal, like any other video game. They figured out that if you call it a sweepstakes, then you can fly under the radar of the current law. McDonalds, Burger King, and MANY others offer sweepstakes winnings, so they are getting by for now. What I understand is the 'Milton McGregor enrichment law' is now headed to the supreme court, so each sherriff is using their own discretion (with input form DA's I'm sure) as to whether or not to challenge these things which are popping up like mushrooms all over the place.

From talking to some folks, it seems like Alabama will have full Casino's within a few years. First the Indians in Wetumpka, then Mitlon Mcgregor, will start sprouting his own at the tracks, then who knows.

But like somebody said, there are 3 of them on 280 between AC and Sylacauga, and they are all doing LOTS of business. I learned all this when I sold one of them some of my services. Thats all I know, but I am sure there are LOTS more details. I am sure we will all know in time.

Thank you for the information Life Time Laker. Gather it is another way to keep the dumb and dumber poor, but it sounds as though there are plenty of takers.

BigFoot - he's right. It really is a phone card/internet access time card. When you buy the card it is also encoded with a set number of "pulls" on a sweepstakes machine. The determination of whether you win or not is made when the card is coded, not when you exercise it. Amazingly the machines that read this card look amazingly similar to a Vegas style slot machine. Put the card in (just like a cash card at the riverboat casinos, nice similarity) and away you go.

Apparently the two keys to getting around the current laws were the predetermined nature of the winning cards and the fact that you could also get one for free by sending a SASE, blah blah blah. Just like the McDonalds deals.

It makes money for the folks paying off the "winners" simply through a very house-titled odds structure. Think about it - casinos make money and the most "equal" game is blackjack where they have a .5% advantage. Other games are much more. They don't make money on every player - it's called the long-term and they will always come out on top over time.

It makes money for the seller of the time since they know most of the time on the cards will never be used. I imagine they sell the time to the reseller at a huge discount because of this.

I'm not wild about the theme and target audience, but I do give credit to the folks that came up with this method of maneuvering a very small opening in the law.

Fools and Money.

I wasn't going to argue the point with him.

" Never argue with an idiot, bystanders might not be able to tell the difference" LL

Not calling you an idiot Big Foot, just a chance to use one of my favorite quotes. Bottom line is it is a gambling spot and they, just like all casinos, want know outside influences.... you know, like sunrise, sunset to influence the folks inside.

I think I have a pretty good idea of how it works. I was at Uncle Miltie's grand opening in B'ham that Wednesday morning he opened his sweepstakes "slot" machines. I was amongst the first to purchase
the red plastic Q cards and amongst the first to use the readers (slot machines). My understanding of a phone card is one you buy with
long distance calling minutes on it. I was simply objecting to the use
of the term "phone card" which does not correlate with the general idea of what most of us think a phone card is. I am well aware of the skilled manner in which Multi-Media and Milton Mcgregor collaborated to pick a hole in the Alabama gambling laws. I am also not anti-gambling. I favor a lottery for Alabama as well as more structured laws for other types of
gambling. I also believe it is not wise to argue with an idiot and for that reason will not respond to the other post right above or below this post.
