I feel certain that I might bring the hair up on a few boaters but I must say this. I spent a while relaxing on my lake side porch today and watched two boats get "stuck" inside the hazzard marker near our house in the Sandy Creek area. The marker is less than 25 yards from the shoreline. Common knowledge should tell anyone of one eye and half sense to stay outside any lake marker, regardless of the water level or time of year. The markers are not there just to look pretty! It truly is amazing the absolute stupidity that some people express on this lake. I, frankly, am not surprised with the number of accidents that happen and sadly, the deaths that have occurred. God help us all.

I know what you mean KF....I witnessed a boatfull of idiots pulling a tuber (without a lifevest, to boot!) between the row of hazard markers and shoreline on that narrow strip of water heading from the Ridge Marina to the Sailing Club. Hate to see what their prop looks like.

After being at the lake this past weekend I think there are a few places on the lake that need hazard buoys that arent there. Up around the Real Island area I was towing a skiier and he fell so I turned around to pick him up. Well he was at the least 30 yards away from the shore so I felt comfortable pulling him up again. After he got up out of the water he had only been up on his ski for about 5 seconds when he hit a ROCK under water. It is a wonder that I didn't hit it with my boat. However there was no marker or any indication of an underwater hazard there. I was trying to think of a way to go back myself and place a hazard of some sort there myself but this happened on our last run before we left for the weekend. My friend is ok but we are both lucky that he only hit the rock with his ski instead of falling before he got out of the water and hitting the rock with his body. Any suggestions as to how to mark that rock myself? Be careful out there.

Just be glad these wonderful "mariners" aren't allowed to fly airplanes without training or a license like they are allowed to try to drive boats.

P.S. Marking hazards is the responsibility of the Marine Police--call 'em.

There are unmarked rocks on the points at both ends of our slough. One has an unofficial buoy placed there by the owners of the lot on that point, but the other has always been unmarked. It is well out from shore, and it starts to become a prop magnet when the lake reaches its current level. BTW, we are up near Real Island, so maybe you met one of those rocks.

I am glad to see the responses to the hazzard markers. There is a suggestion that I have for ALL boaters on this lake, that is, if you have time this fall after the water is at low pool, take a ride in the area of the lake that you normally use. Like us, most people tend to stay in certain areas. Look for hazzards that are not normally visable and STAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CHANNEL! I believe you will be shocked with the number of stumps and rocks that are potentially dangerous, especially when the water starts to receed. I believe it would be virtually impossible to mark them all and that the lake patrol has done a great job with the size of this lake. It will always be the boater's responsibility to use the "common sense factor" at all times. We truly hope that everyone had a great summer in God's country. Most of all, be careful. You have people that love you and would like to keep you around!

We have a big rock in our slough which is really not a issue until the lake gets 3 to 4 feet down. Like now. In the winter I can actually walk out to it and sometimes I will put a marker on. A jug or something but it does not last very long gets run over rope cut etc.

I've been on the lake for 40 years when the lake gets down like it is now
I only go where I am familar. . Most of the sloughs are not marked only the main parts of the lake.

First of all the lake is not properly marked. When I brought this up a few years ago I was promptly chastized and reminded that if I was a native LM person I would have intuitively known where the hazards were and the lake didn't need any markers (and if I didn't like it I should go home).

If you look at the standard markers for Al waterways it's just like GA. or anywhere else. There should be a a stick that indicates "don't pass between the marker and the shoreline" and a different marker for "stay away from". There is not one of these sticks on the lake. You get to guess if it is simply a stay away marker or a don't get between this and the shoreline marker.

I suspect that for all the BS about this subject there is not enough $$ and interested parties on the lake to fix this problem. Until then you need to take a local with you to consult the oracles about which way to turn on one of these markers..... The poor schmuck that you saw get stuck was probably just following standard shoreline marking, common everywhere else but LM.

1. Go down to Store 34 or any 7-11 and buy one of the Lake Martin maps that have contour lines in the lake. Keep that in your boat for reference. 2. You can see the bottom at about 6-10 feet - look down.
3. Practically all hazard markers are close to some piece of land - stay away 360 degrees - don't try to out guess the intent of the marker.
4. This year look for the grass growing in the lake - it's a sure sign that it just MAY be shallow.

Does that mean I have to stop mowing my grass with my Evinrude?

I know, I know. I was just spoiled by the generally good markings at Lanier. It is kinda hard reading contour lines in the dark though......

Man of your advanced age shouldn't be on the lake at night, contour lines or not. I thought you had a place on Lake Martin, not Lanier. BTW, all your fancy markers on Lanier are laying in the dry dirt now.
