I recently had a PTSO meeting with a bunch of moms for my son's middle school ( I am a friggin' officer!)

Anyway, the moms there came from all over...Utah, Michigan, Washington State, etc. I hadn't done this in a long time, but wanted a coke in a bottle and put my salted peanuts in it.

Only one gal - from Birmingham - had ever seen that. Some hadn't seen me put them in the coke, and didn't know what it was when they finally arrived. Others' eye brows were raised just watching me do that.

So...what do you do that Southern? (In my case, it might even be Cuntry Suthern. My dad used to put corn bread in his buttermilk.)

YOUR TURN.

I am not certain this is Southern or not, but I like to make Depression corn bread. I often deviate from the recipe and add cracklings when I can find them.

To this day I still put warm cornbread with a lot of black pepper in my cold buttermilk, can`t stand sweet Yankee cornbread.

I don't know what I do that's not Southern.

I'm fixin' to go to the store.

I am going to skeet off the patio with the hose pipe.

My sweet father in law is Bubba.

I love grits. Long cook, not instant. No self-respecting Southerner would ever tear the top off a package and just nuke 'em. And you can eat them at every meal.

I know what fried corn is and how to make it. And that field corn makes it taste the best .

I ask other Southern folks when I meet them what their Mama's maiden name was (who are your people?)

Anyone who is one minute older than me gets called "Ma'am" or "Sir".

Bourbon.

Alabama and Auburn football. (I'm from Georgia, went to Furman- don't care whether it's Auburn OR Alabama).

Mama taught me the importance of being an iron fist in a velvet glove. Junior League is full of ladies like this.

Thanks for letting me ramble...y'all have a great day!

Oh..that's probably not what you were looking for.

You mean like eating watermelon in the late afternoor in the back yard, sometimes wit h or sometimes without salt.

Putting ketchup on your scrambled eggs.

Cooking up a big pot of bioled peanuts with heavy salt.

Grow hot pepper in summer, eating a pod or two with Supper, putting up Pepper Sauce for winter for my collards and corn bread

New Year's Day - gotta have collards, pepper relish, mac & cheese, ribs, cracklin' cornbread, black eyed peas. Yum! Then watch them ballgames!!!!!

hoppin' johns....black eyed peas cooked with onion, bell pepper, tomatoes, and ham...makes a thick gravy that is perfect with your fried cornbread.... collards, too. that's what we eat all day while we watch football.

Thank you, darlin'!

Oh and one last thing that definately does not fit into the "Southern Lady" category:

What's the mating call of the Southern Belle?

"Y'all, I'm so drunk!"

....how 'bout bacon grease? You should keep a jar of it in the fridge....one of my favorite "seasonings." (Hey CATBOAT, you and your new arteries forget I ever said that !!)

....regarding the liquor, I prefer the "tonics" (gin or vodka) between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and Bourbon during the fall/winter. Unless of course Alabama's or Auburn's first game is BEFORE Labor Day, at which point is is perfectly acceptable to make the switch early. For you Forum women....Pink Panty Pulldowns are in season anytime you want!

I wouldn't think of wearing white shoes before Easter or after Labor Day and I drink sweet milk.

My dad did the buttermilk/cornbread deal, but I couldn't handle it. I did pick up on his blackeye peas on cornbread.

It's very simple. Brown flour in bacon grease, add a can of tomatoes, salt and pepper and cook.,add milk or cream. It really is good or maybe it's an acquired taste.
