Lifetime Laker said he liked to have the puddin stirred. This question was asked at my book club this week and I was surprised at some of the responses. Would George W be president if he had been born into Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, or Bill Clintons families?

Nope

He probably would have never even been elected if it weren't for the electoral college.

I would get rid of the electoral college and daylight saving time.

As I recollect, the public loved Ronald Reagan. I think Georgie might have been elected if he was born a Reagan (don't go by the Reagan siblings and some of their ways...just Georgie) and IF the Reagans turned out sons to be governors like the Bushes...I t hink the Reagan name would carry a lot of weight...especially Republican weight.

All these responses are interesting but much like the book club discussion most do not answer the question.

After this performance, I really doubt the American people will ever allow another member of the Bush family in the White House.

To be in either the clinton or carter families, there would have to be some rather blatant In-breeding involved. To have been born into the Regan family would have been an honor. Bush got the nod on who he is and what he stands for. Not perfect but way ahead of the whiners that came in distant second. The lack of capitalization on the first two losers was not an oversight.

And AlGore lost, THANK GOD, with over 50% of the vote. The electorial college works, without it presidential elections could be decided by the voters in about 3-5 states. Namely, NY, CA, OH and a couple of other denesly populated, heavily democratic populations.

Thanks, but I will keep the college!!!

I believe that Mrs. Bush is a fine woman who has devoted her life to her family and helping them achieve their goals through her love and devotion to her husband, family, and God. After all she has produced 2 presidents, a governor, and head of the CIA. I can also say that I would rather have George W Bush running our country than anyone else, especially John Kerry or Al Gore. I think he has done a great job with the circumstances that he has been given and I fully support the war on terror. Personally I am sick of all of the politically correctness that everyone in America is so adament about, if you believe in something stand up for it. Thats how this country has become what it is today. What would have happened if back in the 1700's the patriots had just kept their mouths shut so as not to offend someone, in particular the loyalists and the King, we would not be where we are today. As one of my history professors put it, "Be a patriot, stand up for what you believe in, and fight for what is right, even if all odds are against you". Getting back to the point I believe that George W. is a patriot at heart who is doing what he believes is right/best for this country. One last rant before I sign off ... The American people need to stop listening to celebrities. Sadly enough ignorant rappers and ignorant actors are the source of a good percentage of Americans' opinions. People need to think for themselves and come up with their own opinions and maybe the concencus will be a little different on both sides.

Tate AU you got my vote. If a Kerry or Gore had won we would now be wondering where the next terrorist would strike. SUPPORT YOUR COUNTRY, RIGHT OR WRONG.

You know, if you go back and read what you wrote, it will fit equally well for both people “for” and “against” W’s actions. And I would call “political correctness” blindly following our leaders without question. If our forefathers had blindly followed the King, we would not have the U.S.A. today. You are saying our forefathers were right to not follow their leader, the King, but people are wrong to not blindly follow our leader today, W. And when we went to Iraq, all odds were not against W. Myself and about 75% of the country were and still are for going after the terrorists, wherever they are. It is only now that we see there were no terrorists in Iraq that we have the division. Opposition to being in Iraq has not gone from 25% of the country to 70% because people are listening to celebrities. People are just using their brain and applying the ole “common sense” approach. Everyone I know wants to fight terrorism at its heart. That is why I wish we had blown the tops off the mountains in Afghanistan going after Bin Laden. We should have leveled that country and that sucker would have been dead. Instead, it is five years later and we still don’t seem to be going after the head of the snake. And by the way, I am far, far from being a Democrat. I voted for W. in his first election and did not vote for President in the last. I just did not see a choice. P.S. -War Eagle anyway.

I have to agree with PC Al in the fact the it can be argued both ways. I hope we don't have to get into a big political debate. There are most likely other Forums dedicated to this pursuit.

I do hope all of us are around 20 years from now to see what history books say about the current President Bush and his administration. History generally reveals things closer to the truth.

When 9/11 occured I told co-workers then that we had better get the terrorists and their network in a hurry, because the American people are cowards basically who don't want to fight. We will shake our fists for a while then forget about it. Political correctness is more important. I keep hearing we should get out of the middle East now. As long as we are dependant on oil we better stay or the price of oil may put us all walking. We hire yardmen, maids, cooks, car washer and even soldiers to fight our wars. Should we leave the mid East and bring every body home who is gonna keep Osama hiding and ducking? Then when he comes back over here again who will we hire to stop him? I wash my own car, cut my own grass, don't have a maid, and keep several guns loaded and ready. Thank GOD for George Bush!!!!!!!

on what you said. I think W is well meaning, patriotic and courageous but a little short on leadership and vision. Looks like that the court justice appointments were very good -so far.

Now both Bushes love bureacracy, big government and spending. Took "daddy B" 4 years to add back the bureaucratic jobs that took Regan 8 years to eliminate for example.

I think we (conservatives) have missed a golden opportunity to reduce government's influence on our lives. We have controlled both houses of congress and the presidency. For example the drug entitlement will cause the cost of drugs to soar and be another huge entitlement program. The immigration problem is excruciating and may be politically impossible to solve now. Bush has not said a word about elimiating the "citizen-and-entitlements-by-birth" rule that is the REAL source of the illegal problem.

The war in Iraq was a calculated move to keep the bad guys from getting control of the oil by creating a democratic buffer. Say what you want, the idea was good. Probem is we westerners for the most part are historically and biblically illiterate and do not understand the mentality of the Ishmaelites.

I think I'm becoming a Libertarian...kinda

Amen brother/sister........oops that's being politically correct. I hate the fact that our generation will be credited with the term "Politcal Correctness" because it makes me sick.
No President will ever make everybody happy all of the time, it is impossible. But I am proud to say that I voted for GW both times and I would do it again. I know everything isn't perfect but I think he has done a good job with all that he has had to deal with during his Presidency. I would hate to think how gore and scary kerry would have handled some of the things that GW has had to handle. They probably would have handled some things better, but when it comes to protecting our freedom, IMHO neither one of them are man enough to make some of the decisions that have had to be made.

I can't believe I'm wading into this, but here goes...
No one can say how Kerry or Gore or McCain or anyone else would have handled the crises with which Bush has been challenged. I wasn't crazy about either Kerry or Gore, but would have voted for that ole' yaller dog before Bush. Had McCain won the nomination, I would have voted for him. Bush scares me, still. He has all the character traits of a playground bully, indulged by doting parents, and never required to be responsible or accountable for his actions. He is inarticulate at best(even with some of the best speech writers in the business), particularly when forced to speak "off the cuff," and lacks good grammatical skills. I read many books written about this president (both before and after he was elected, because he gave me the willies from the beginning; and both pro and anti Bush). He has never known want, much less poverty; few presidents have. His family had the financial and political pull to erase evidence of his mishaps - lucky for him. He professes a strong religious belief and I do not doubt his devotion to his faith. Like many people of faith, however, he appears to feel that whatever he does is devinely inspired and is providential. That seems like zealotry to me.

I have just deleted the rest of my venting. Please don't hate me for my opinions - I will probably not live long enough to see how history views this presidency... Read the books - but only the ones with bibliographies to document the quotes and claims.
